just got my "return airfare" after fulfilling (close enough) one year's service. they gave me a r/t ticket. dalian-seoul-LA- St Louis.
price? 18,000+ RMB. just something to keep in mind when negotiating things. |

Hypothetical question this, I know, but do you think your school would have given you the 18,000 RMB if you had decided not to return to the US?
I suspect they may have found a much cheaper Beijing or Shanghai to LA fare and given you the equivalent of that fare instead. In which case could you have negotiated for more? My Foreign Affairs Office is staffed by very reasonable and helpful people but often they seem to operate on a take it or leave it policy, with no room for negotiation. |

Did they foolishly pay the price entered on the ticket???
There has ALWAYS been a huge discrepancy between the ticket price I found printed on the ticket, and the price I actually paid through an agent. |

the answer is probably - no. but there's a very easy way around that.

thats true sometimes eddy, but not always. i think it depends on whether or not you buy your ticket direct from the airline, or thru a travel agent, or from some other kind of wholesale seller. sometimes my tickets show the actual price paid, sometimes not.
btw, depending on air carrier and routing of the flight, RMB18,000 return to the US isnt too outrageous. my last ticket was RMB13000 and the one before that was 11000. and that was when oil and fuel prices (and air ticket prices) were going up. now that oil prices have gone down again it doesnt look like airlines have lowered their prices to reflect that reality. |

they gave the me the option of the ticket or the money. if anything, my company ain't cheap.
just started this thread because i've been reading too many job offers offering 5,000 RMB travel stipends and the sort. back in the day, a school shafted me out of my airfare. so, i hate seeing/reading of others experiencing the same. |
