Do i have to do this myself or will my school do this for me? Is there such a thing as direct deposit or will i be handed a check? and, in your experience, should i keep my US bank account to withdraw funds from on the side and balance two accounts (and eventually, when i leave, transfer the RMB to my US account)? |

I am sure your school can help you. You just walk in with your passport, sign a document and open your account. Schools either direct deposit (i prefer) or hand you cash. The bank account will actually be two separate ones, RMB and US dollars. You can not use your American bank in China and simply withdraw funds, transfer funds.
If you need to, you can change RMB into dolars here (the school has the obligation to help you) and then send it via Western Union to a friend in the states |

Hey all,
I'm moving to Ningbo, China in 2 weeks. Question:
Is it smart to change my American bank account from my local bank to HSBC? Will they keep my dollars seperate from my yuan? Like 2 different checking accounts?
Thanks! |

Sometimes I have changed my yuan to USD and then deposited some USD into my regular Chinese savings account. My passbook shows two amounts: how much yuan I have and how many USDs. I don't do it often, rather I send my dollars home, but you can save both here. |
