Which would you take?

Well, what are you plans for staying in Japan and working?

Refuse to take national health insurance now is not a crime, but if you choose to get on it later, you will be obligated by law to make backpayments up to 3 years' worth for the time you weren't on it, even if you had legitimate insurance elsewhere.

You're required by law to enrol in national health insurance unless you're staying for less than a year.

I've been here for 5 years and never got an answer to this, even when asking "official" people.

While you are theoretically supposed to enroll, there are no penalties for not doing so- it's a bit like paying the NHK fee Wink

Having to make 3 years worth of back payments if you ever do sign up could be considered a penalty though I suppose.

In a similar discussion to this on another site one guy mentioned that his not being on shakai hoken or kokumin kenko hoken had not been an issue even when he got permanent residence. Of course that may not be the case for everyone.

Brads,
What question? You just quoted two of us. What are you referring to?
