Should the employer pay all visa and residence permit costs in China and the employee pay for the visa costs outside the country?

There is no legal provision that supports your hope of getting all visa costs defrayed but in general, yes, they do pay for your RP and in-country medical exam costs.

I did meet laowais that had to pay half of their visa costs, though.

i paid my Z visa costs, which were HK$450 as i recall. travel costs were minimal since its only a short day trip to HK from where i am. the school covered all other fees for me to get legal in this country.

some people insist the school cover ALL costs, but i'm ok with paying the fees outside of the country. at any rate, over the course of the year, the school gives us approx. RMB1000 as a gift before major holidays, which more than makes up for it.

My first three and a half years in Hefei, Joy School and AIAI paid for all of the costs. Since I've moved to Xi'an, we now split the cost 400 RMB for each party. Perhaps a year or two ago there was a thread on SAFEA regulations and you could save money by having a contract less than a year.

You can loook it up in an old thread, SAFEA ... you pay for all expenses to get here ... you pay for the visa (and medical if you do it in your home country)

The school pays for all expenses here ... medical done in CHina, FEC, RP

These are the SAFEA Regs .... whichs means??? not that much. TIC, ya know. Basically what ever you hammer out in your contract is what you should expect to follow. If your contract does not specify any of these things (pretty sure the standard SAFEA contract does), I have found the rule of thumb to be the SAFEA regs.

The RP fee is not all that much. If I had a really nice school and/or a really nice contract, I wouldn't fight hard about the school insisting I pay the RP

Any respectable company pays the expense for its employee. It's part of the relocation process. It's the least they can do for making you jump the hoops that you will have to jump to get all the paperwork done. After all, you have to pay $50 to get a visa into the country. Why shell out even more to get a z visa once you are there ?

If they keep passing on the cost to teachers then pretty soon we will all have to start working for free.

If an employee, they should pay.

If a consultant with a year contract and a lump sum figure...u should pay, unless it is consider operating cost, which would be determined by your contract with the company.

Interesting choice of analogy, as the rumored meaning of the rule of thumb is the use of the thumb as a reference for approximating the diameter of the size of the stick used for beating. I too think of the SAFEA regs as a guideline for how much of a beating a Chinese company can give an employee.
