IMHO, you'd be better off with an MFA, provided, of course that the subject in which you are interested lends itself to MFA studies.
You are referring to a Master of Fine Arts, right? An MFA is for graduate study in the visual arts (painting, drawing, threater, dance, etc). An MFA typically is a terminal degree in its field, an MA/MLitt/MSc typically is not.

It depends upon the university. One can earn an MFA in literature and creative writing. Wikipedia fails to mention this. |

I've seen ads for jobs where more money is offered to applicants with an MA. Is that an MA in anything? Or do the universities require a TEFL or Applied Linguistics MA?

I have an MA and a TESL cert, and I was able to gain employment in a couple of international joint-venture schools. My last two positions in China paid over 20,000 RMB/month. If you decide to work at a Chinese university, an MA usually allows you an extra 1000 RMB/month, so you can make roughly 4 or 5 thousand/month, instead of 3 or 4 thousand. If you decide to make ESL your life career, an MA in Applied Linguistics will allow you to make the big bucks in the Middle East, or improve your chances of landing a teaching job in a Western university/college ESL program.

Don't waste that MA in the Middle East or Korea! Check this out:

I've never regretted getting my MA. I'm not advising anyone to get one just for working in China but you never know what the future will hold or where you will want to teach in the future.
