I wish this thread hadn't been started in a way. because more people might try tefl as a way out of a crisis and ergo causing the numbers in TEFL to increase making it more difficult to get a tefl job or a good one anyway. I don't like competition. |

I think getting involved in EFL during the recession in the UK is a great idea.
I started out in the mid-90s and thought I'd do a couple of years in Spain (never made it).....I find myself, 2 postgraduate EFL qualifications later, in a management post with one of the UK's biggest global EFL organisations.
There's no need to see it as a temporary stop-gap solution until the credit in the UK starts flowing again.
Once you gain experience you can move into management or specialise (Business English, ESP etc). If you have previous work experience in any of these areas you could be in demand. You can cash in by working in the Gulf or have a life of leisure in Asia. You can drop in and out of the market to suit yourself - I see CVs all the time of teachers taking lengthy sabbaticals.Fine.
Start out on the right foot - CELTA or Trinity. |

Sorry to sound old fashion but have you been "knocking on doors" at reputable schools or just sending out emails and posts? |

Sending out emails and posts.
If i knock on doors will have to travel for a while and break into my savings. probably worth it in the long run. please tell me emails are what is letting me down. A friend in Poland said i should go in person. Have emailed 22 schools in Poland so far.

Reputable language schools in Europe (including Poland) very rarely hire from abroad. That's why your emails haven't worked. Employers want to see you standing in their offices, CV in hand, looking professional and reliable before they'll give you any consideration. |
