The expats I met in my particular job were mostly nice. My students were mostly nice, if very misinformed.

I just hate the way Saudi and Qatari bosses behave. I hated the complete narrow mindedness that I encountered at every level. The abject intolerance of free thought and the totally deluded opinions I encountered. The teaching was pointless as all were expected to pass.

The day there was the big car smash on the road from Jubail and the Saudi Gazette ran a headline blaming it on foreigners just did me. I think the poor Asians were thrown from the back of a Hilux in a 56 car pile u;must've been their fault then.

As for Bob's reference to duplicity.....I think a lot of that comes from most Arabs' failure to be able to say 'no mate, I can't help you out on this one.'

Why did I go to Saudi after a long stint in Qatar?I went there to earn money after another job had fallen through at the last minute.

^ The prison conditions described in his letter are positively horrific and sad.

Didn't know the Thai government was so disgusting, immoral, and barbaric.

I feel for him. Hope he gets out soon. And then he should leave the hell-hole and write a book about his experience. You know it would be a hit, and make him rich!

Personally, I think the guy sounds like a bit of a malicious a**hole! He's taken a few (probably true) stories, put them all together and made it into the 'norm' of Saudi Arabia!!

Just MHO...

Well, now that you do, make sure you don't slander their ruling family on your next trip. When in Bangkok and all that.....

I reckon the article above is one of the few exaggeration-free examples of Harry's 'writings'.

Come on. Even the Emiratis can't stand Saudi.

As for the Thai government and their morals...don't forget the boat people they towed out to sea and set adrift. Nonetheless, given the same net monetary gain, which country would you choose? (Nile queen is exempt from this question--her answer goes without saying. Ostensibly it's for the love of Wahhabi and tribal cultures, but I think there must be a Marc Anthony there... )

Sobering reading indeed. Written in a matter-of-fact, minimalistic style, providing a vivid portrayal of his abysmal living conditions. I hope that this ordeal will provide a catalyst for him to write a better-selling novel than the one that got him in this appaling sitution. And hope it gives him a successful writing career.

As for Scot's implication that KSA is not corrupt, sleazy, sordid and unpalatable. Phhhhht!

Another male poster showing an unseeingly and frankly rather bizarre interest in a woman he's never met...

Personally, while I can see the attraction Thailand holds for men with more (but not all that much more) money than attractiveness, I have little interest in it myself.

Well, his 'white man in Thai jail hell" did get him an audience beyond the Bangkok Post, but a complete lack of talent and integrity does make itself obvious sooner or later.
