I got mine. I'm going a bit south of Chiba.
How about you? Anything yet? |

I am anticipating an April start as well. I have no idea where they would try to put me. I have a girlfriend who lives in Tokyo, and I know that if I live in Tokyo I can make more money off the books. Obviously, I won't get Tokyo, but it'll be interesting to see what they say. Since I am being hired from overseas, they may think that they can ship me to wherever they'd like. I've been in Japan a few times before, so I'm not "green".
Anyone know when in April is the usual start date? |

Oh I think it is up to the BOEs on if you and when you get hired. So you can also be a last minute replacement or such. Who knows. I'm going either March 19th or the 23rd. It's really up to the BOE not Interac now.
At my interview I know this Jamaican guy blew it. They may have hired him anyhow. But his presentation was poor, and he kept using Japanese(poorly) despite being told not to. He ma have been hired by Interac, but the BOEs might not want him. He may have the last pick possible. Not saying that's you, but you may be down the list a little bit. So don't worry. |

They are sending out info on placements at the moment. You should have or will soon receive info on how it will be done. In case you haven't here's and extract from it:
We will contact you by phone to give you a placement option, we will then ask you to research the area online and get back to us with your decision. We do not expect a yes or no answer on the spot but we would appreciate it if you could get back to us within a day or two.
We will give you the assignment location, school information and any other details that we have at our disposal that will help you to make a decision. We are asking that you research the area of Japan on your own, we will be able to answer any questions that you may have, but we will not be sending links on the location.
We cannot give you a list of positions available to choose from as this would change almost continuously with ALTs accepting and declining assignments and would understandably be impossible to manage.
Should you not wish to accept the first position that we offer you then that is fine, we will get back to you with another option and we will continue this cycle until we can find a position that suits you. However, please be aware that the location that we offer you will be chosen with your preferences in mind as well as the needs of our clients and the longer that we wait the fewer positions we will have to choose from.
I think you need to be aware though that as new overseas recruits we are possible the last to get placed. Returning ALTs get first picks. Major cities like Tokyo, etc go to those with extra qualifications and japanese school system experience. I think internal recruits will get placed before us too as they will have housing already and may want to avoid transfer. So of course you may not get your ideal location, but we were told this during the interview presentation. |

I don't know. I did not get my location, and I found out last week. It can all be random for all we know. Also JET does the same thing, so it;s not like we have much of a choice outside of Eikaiwas. |

| It'd be easier if they just gave 3 locations at once and forced you to choose 1. As it is now, if you reject the first one, you may get an even worse offer in the 2nd call. |

But that wouldn't work. As they mentioned it would be impossible to manage. They would give you a choice of 3 (tough luck if they are all horrible), you choose one but then they would need to find people to fill the other 2 so eventually people will end up in exactly the same position as us now. Plus, that would just lengthen the whole process and the people who get placed last (i.e. us oversea new recruits) still end up with the placements that have been rejected by everyone else.
There is no perfect solution in this case. You can either make the best of where you get placed, or simply choose to pull out altogether. Even on JET you don't choose where you go, only give preferences. But from what ex-JETs told me, they don't even get the chance to turn down a placement without good reason. |

I guess it is a gamble. Play your odds. If they give you a terrible placement. Let's use me. I hate the cold, and don't want to be too dar out in the Inaka. So they offer me super rural Hokkaido. I would decline. In hopes that I would get a better position. I would go about it that way. If the placement is unacceptably wrong fro you, delince. |

I think you are right. Plus in JET they are prolly even more Inaka then we will be. I say ta the worst go and accept your banishment. Then next year change jobs or find a better position. Or do Eikaiwa. In any case weigh your options. |

Anyone else get a call yet?
I'm still waiting on my visa stuff, and for my BOE to contact me. So I'm nervous too. I too can be in trouble if the drag their feet. So we're all in the same boat.
Yeah, we as ALTs are like olde tyme garrison soldiers. We need to protect West Oklamhoma from Injins. So we get stuck in weird and off the wall places like that. |
