According to this article, Mexico is now the fattest country in the world. This of course is causing more health problems for Mexico.
And who says diet and health aren't linked?? |

No one ever said that.
Funny how Mexico is often referred to as a third world country and yet it has first world problems. Never been able to get my head around that.
The population here is ageing too...used to be that close to half the country's population was under 25...the balance is shifting as people get wealthier and live longer. |

...and having fewer children. That's the other factor that contributes to shifting the population distribution. But no more about that; my comment's not on the thread's topic. |

Im not surprised by the claim what with all the tacos and hotdogs that people eat. I have put on weight here which im not happy about.
Coke is very popular thats true. I used to tell my girlfriend that i thought mexico must be the most obese country after the states but she never believed me.
And its true vegetables are not big in mexico. i love my veg and i never see much veg served in restaurants or homes. much as i love Mexican food, its not the healthiest! |

the most obese??? I find that hard to believe... everytime I go back to the States I am struck by the difference in size... and Im a "big beautiful woman" myself.
Yes there are large people here too (thank goodness I dont stand out too much then) but I find it hard to believe it outranks the US. |

I find it strange too, it's not as if healthy food is hard to get or expensive. There's a fruit shop on every corner - and if you don't like fruit you can at least make the effort to eat it with chili and lime... mmm. |

I love the fruit stands!!
Apart from the USA which other country could be a contender for most obese? I really do think Mexico is up among the top contenders. The UK is getting quite fat but still not up to Mexican quality obesity!! |

Canada ranks among the world's most endowed waistlines.
I'm not surprised by Mexico being ranked near the top, though being number 1 is a bit of a surprise. Look at the top killers in Mexico - heart disease and diabetes...sure indicators that people are getting heavier. |

I love Mexican food too, except for the general lack of vegetables. Since I don't cook much at home, I'm happy to have found a couple of little restaurants in my neighborhood who serve up tasty, often crunchy, veggies as part of their daily "men" specials. |

I used to have a dream of opening a restuarant that served healthier versions of traditional Mexican cuisine as it is really very easy to do. It would be called El MexiSano and the catch phrase would be, Lo que te entoja, solo sano. I'm posting it here because I've come to realize I'm never going to do it so please, someone, steal my idea. |

I think the true statistic is:
USA is top in sheer numbers, by virtue of having 3 times the population of Mexico, but:
Mexico is No.1 by percentage of population. Also, at least as far as I can see, the degree of obesity seems to be higher in the USA i.e. those that are obese are real porkers! |

Something I've noticed here in Veracruz that I didn't see in rural Chiapas is extremely overweight kids. These kids (as young as kinder age) are not only overweight but out of shape. Many of the moms on the other hand look like fashion models.
I think it's a life style problem here - especially with the wealthy. Kids are driven everywhere, their lunch boxes are packed with garbage and sweets, and they're given money every day to spend at school on more sugar and garbage. They're not active during recess and the 'dance' and gym class programs (at this school) are a joke. Seems all the girls are ever taught is how to march.
I did a quick head count at our school and I'd say almost 1/3 of the kids fall into the extremely overweight out of shape category. These kids aren't chubby, they're (pardon me) porkers who can't run for 30 seconds without stopping to breathe. Mondays when I ask my SS what they did on the weekend, they talk about video games, birthday parties (more sugar) and other sedentary activities - only 2 including one little American boy talk about bike riding, playing soccer, etc.
But here in the neighbourhood where I live which is a poorer neighbourhood the kids are always out in the streets in the evenings - playing soccer, skateboarding, racing around, laughing... And parents are outside too because it's cooler - walking, gossiping, dancing, or sitting - there's always lots of music and activity. No one's hiding in the house watching TV probably because very few can afford airconditioning.

Interesting. I work with extremely privileged kids and one day during yard duty I realized that nearly every one was thin - I found one girl that I would call overweight (but not obese). Of course, that was not the entire population but I was intrigued when I made that observation. Made me wonder what the eating disorder numbers were....
Also, obesity is often tied to the poor as they tend to eat the copious amounts of junk food/fast food because it is cheaper than fruits and other healthy foods(esp. in places like the USA). Even here where the fruit is cheap the junk food is still a better bang for your buck! |
