Hi. I was just wondering if it is normal for a school to ask for a photocopy of your passport in a job application? I'm thinking of applying for a job out in Japan, and have seen an application where this is mentioned. If anyone could help, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks! Very Happy

Yes it is normal. In fact get at least 4 copies of the photo you want to send. As you will be asked for 2 copies at least twice.

elkarlo,
I think you are mistaking the copy of the passport I.D. page with the passport photo. Two different things.

Yes, employers often want you to send a passport-like or passport-sized photo of yourself.

It is somewhat common to ask for a copy of your passport I.D. page, but it seems a bit odd just for the application. If they want to send paperwork for a visa application, they'll need that. Perhaps if you tell us more about the stage of your application process, it'll help us to understand the situation.

If you already have a visa, then the school will want to see a copy of the visa page, of course. If you don't have a visa yet, then I'm not sure- proof of age, nationality and place of birth?

And proof your passport won't expire before your contract.

Thanks for the help, that's great. I was looking at an advert for a language centre in Japan that stated that in your application, amongst a copy of your university certificate, a recent photo, etc, they wished to see a photocopy of the main pages of your passport. Thanks again for the help! Very Happy
