Are Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players available in Saudi? If so, what are the prices? |

Generally speaking, electrical applicances here are c-rap! To get anything half decent, you would actually be paying at least 20% more c.f. European and American prices... |

Yes to what Asda said, plus you are likely to be sold a defective product and there is no return policy. You'll have to take it to the "service center" where you will be forced to go through several Larry-Curly-Moe repair attempts before they'll even consider letting you exchange it. It's not worth it to purchase your electronics here. |

Well, Teta Mia, some of the shops in the Magic Kingdom put a big placard with the following message in plain Arabic: The product when sold is neither refundable nor exchangeable!!! So guess for yourself.
In addition, some of the electronic shops in the Magic Kingdom sell items which are trafficked from China, assembled in Jeddah, and sold in Riyadh with a Made in Japan or Made in USA labels!!!! The same technique is used for clothes and other products! |

When I bought my Acer in Riyadh back in the 90's, I became convinced that the ME is the electronic dumping grounds of the world...a REAL piece of crap! Buy from overseas and take it out of the box so you can say it's used. Unless they've changed...and we all know how things change all the time in Saudi, they'll levy a customs fee on you if it looks like it's brand-spanking new.

I have bought top notch stuff from saudi, but if you don't buy brands from top stores you will get c**K shafted |

HD doesn't seem that common in Saudi (is it anywhere?), and I thought Blu-Ray had gone the way of Betamax.
I just bought a PVR a few weeks ago, and was amazed how little choice there was. I was also amazed to find that you could still buy cassette VCRs. Presumably the TCNs can't afford the $400 a PVR costs.
One thing to bear in mind is to find out where Japanese goods are made. You'll see the same TV made in Malaysia and made in Japan, and the made in Japan one is 20% more expensive though a damn site better. |

No, BlueRay is now the established high-definition DVD format. HD is certainly not only common but pretty much now the standard in the US/Canada. Of my 200+ channels here, almost half the programming, including most of the mainstream, is currently in HD, and increasing all the time.
It is "HD-DVD" that went the way of Betamax. In the US now you can get Blueray players for $199, and most new titles are available in the format. Thousands of older titles are in the works.
Curious--are they actually broadcasting, at least on satellite or cable, in HD in the UK and/or continental Europe yet? Or is it still just Japan and North America? |

Well, is not only America and Japan which broadcast in HD! There are other respected nations in this planet which do that!
In UK, BBC, ITV, Virgin Media, and SKY TV, all provide programs in HD through satellites and cables. |

Yes, Blu-Ray players are available here, but I don't have any idea how much they cost. I will be going to a large electronics store (similar to Best Buy/Circuit City) on Saturday. I will look them up for you. |
