Is anyone familiar with the TEFL certification offered through the TEFL Institute? They are headquartered in Chicago, with programs also offered in New York and throughout Europe. I am looking specifically at their 120 hour course, which includes 20 observation/teaching hours. It seems that the research I've done indicates CELTA and Trinity CertTEFOL are the most well-known certification programs, but it also seems like the TEFL Institute offers a similar program. Ultimately, I would like to teach in Eastern Europe, particularly Budapest. I would appreciate any thoughts or advice, particularly if you are familiar with this certification program or teaching in Budapest.

First, there's really no need to post the same query on three different forums here -

Second, while brand name certifications are useful in terms of recognition, there are generic certs that meet the basic newbie standards. The course you describe sounds as though it does meet the basics. However, I'd like to give you another thought on the issue:

There are lots of very good reasons to take a course in the country where you want to start working, if at all possible.

Training in-country offers you a great chance to get your feet wet in the country/culture
while you still have a support system they usually arrange for your housing during the course, airport pickup, and local orientation. Your practice teaching students will really be representative of those youll be working with when you start. You can be sure that your certification will be recognized by local employers, and a training centre can give you invaluable contacts and advice regarding reputable local employers.

You might want to check out a couple of these links before committing to the TEFL Institute course:

I don't know much about them, but these sites suggest they are worth staying away from. If you are going to Budapest, you could always do the CELTA there at International House.

One thing that is conspicuously absent from its website is anything regarding accreditation. Is the course accredited? If so, by whom? The website is: www.teflinstitute.com/index.php.
