hi folks. i just went to thailand during the spring festival to get my z-visa (new one, new employer) and since ive been back, they seem to be dragging their feet about getting my residents permit, or green book. its mu understanding this must be done withing 30 days ao arrival, and ive been back 5 days longer than that. my boss said (keeps saying) dont worry, we will take care of it, and pay any fine...just keep working. im pretty worried, i went to thailand, and got the z-visa on my own money, at their request...now they seem to be playing some game. any ideas what i should do? other than that, its a pretty good gig, pays well, and i like the students, but i really need my paper work in order, before its a big problem.

Batman---did you really have to leave to get a new Z? I thought this could all be done here. Not that theres anything wrong with going to Thailand-well done.

I wouldn't worry. If your school has even a tiny bit og guanxi it should be fine. They always let things slide here. My green book is actually for a differnt province than where I live (from a branch of the same school) and it has been OK. I have been able to travel, change money, get a bank acct etc etc..

Try not to get arrested though---at least until you have the green book. Wink

well, they told me there was no way to get a z-visa in the country...maybe its a new thing. i did have a great time in thailand, and looked at it as an excuse to have a well deserved vacation somewhere not so heavily poluted, and full of the everyday analosity we find here. im just not sure how important the residents permit is, and how worried i should be.

Whilst I am aware it's a legal requirement for you to own a resident's permit, I wonder why you need it?
It's needed if you change money at the bank. And it's an ideal ID on trips in the country - saves you from using your passport.
But what else?

If they live up to their side of the bargain, then you stand to lose nothing.
FOr them: an extra outlay and more hassles.
Yes, it's kind of mysterious that they were not able to obtain a work visa for you...

The university here in Xi'an organised for 1 American and 1 Australian to get Z-visas without leaving the town let alone the country. They had come over on L-visas by mistake, and the univeristy is fixing it for them. Happened last week, so it is still possible.

You'll be OK to work as long as you've got a valid Z-visa. But that visa expires within 30 days after you get it, so you need the green book before then. It's like an extended Z-visa. Hmmm .... When did you obtain the Z in Thailand? Maybe this is the issue the school's talking about.

Thailand is a fantastic place for a visa run if necessary, better than HK I'd think. Besides the sunny beaches, food, women, and cheap hotels, you can even bring RMB cash on the plane and exchange it at the airport.

I found that out after I went through the black market in China and changed money into USD.

I got a Z visa from inside China. but it's not in my passport, the gave me a separate book. I changed jobs five months ago and am still waiting for them to change my Z visa and resisdent permit to this school. The problem is that my old school went out of business , so that threw a wrench in the works
