It's gotta be HESS.

Is the bookstore part of the school, or is it a seperate business operation within the building?

I looked around on the company website and found this address...

Tao Yuan office:
Chung Cheng Rd. # 573,
Tao Yuan, Taiwan, ROC

I think the bookstore is directly connected to the school. At least that was my understanding of it. Is this connected to HESS?

Hi. As the name implies, I live in Taoyuan. I know it fairly well. I've never seen the place you refer to. If you pm me, I can go seek it out. Chung Cheng Rd. is kind of the main drag here. Shouldn't be too hard to locate the location you listed. However, I expect I won't find a school. As the others say, it's probably a recruiter. If reading these boards has provided you with anything, it should be the sound advice that it's probably best for you to be here to get your job. You're just not in a good place to do that where you are right now. Think about it. Would you take a job without visiting the place and meeting the boss first in Canada? Trust me, you don't want to do that here. I'm not saying dump this company entirely. However, it's probably best that you get here without any obligations to them and look around. Good luck.

You mentioned that the recruiter (the company you are dealing with is definitely a recruiter), mentioned to you that the school you would be working for is located upstairs from a bookstore. HESS run chain schools and bookstores - so putting two and two together, it would seem possible that the school that the recruiter is lining you up for is HESS.

Just deal directly with the schools. You will save yourself a lot of trouble.

Just to update, I did check out the address in Taoyuan the original poster had listed. There is some kind of English company there, though it isn't big and doesn't have an English sign. The sign read: guo ji xin suan mei yu (or so I think. the sign was in some kind of fancy script and I'm not 100 percent on the middle two characters --heart and suan as in plan "da suan"). Anyone heard of this place?

Here is a report that I recently received. It is from a former teacher at the institute in question in Tao Yuan.
Quote:

... it's a rent-a-teacher, yes the pay is $500 an
hour
with "free" rent. It is a bookstore with a school on floors 2 and 3
and the
teachers live on floors 3 and 4. As someone who is currently working
out
thier contract (note laziness) for above mentioned company, I can say,
you
can do better, though it's still better than Hess. The poster would do
best
to take all advice and come and look for a job in Taiwan, not overseas.
ESL4Asia is ok, if you are young, inexperinced, fearful and or lazy,
with
low expectations.
Some people may have worse things to say, but honestly, if you are as I
have
described, ESL4Asia is the way to go. (I may add that I'm not renewing
my
contract, and wouldn't, even if I were staying in Taiwan.)

If you would be so kind as to post this information, I would be greatly
appreciated...

How exactly do you 'confirm' these types of reports? I mean, I am sure that in most cases the schools version of events varies considerably from that of the teacher. How do you decide which is more accurate? Guessitmate?!
