Hi,

I've just received a job offer from Salalah College of Technology of the Ministry of Manpower - does anyone have any pertinent information, anecdotes, rumours, or horror-stories about the place? If so, I would appreciate the info.
Thanks!

Also, what does the average single accommodation go for in Salalah?

Hi,

I work at the COAS next to the Manpower College so cannot comment on what goes on in there, but if you would care to write "Salalah" into the search box you may find some stuff I wrote a couple of years ago describing this place. My opinion still stands, in fact I am liking the place even more!!

Knew two women who worked in Salalah.
One complained there was very little to do there, almost next to nothing, and the boredom was truly killing her - she left after a year for the ''nothing to do'' reason.
Knew another woman who adored it there. Tried to find out why as I was myself interested in Salalah too, so asked many questions, but never managed to get any clear picture why she liked it there so much - maybe she did for some amorous reasons? Or because it was her first encounter with the M.E. so she had her honey moon with the culture quite extended?
Anyway, I didn't trust her skill of judgement in general so I didn't trust her Salalah one too.
I think the place must be carefully chosen. I was interviewed once for a place there and the interviewer told me honestly, when asked, it is not an easy area to be in, unless - more or less - beach life is enough for one or one is a so called ''nature lover''.
I truly searched for an argument that would push my will to Salalah, but so far haven't found one strong enough. Still looking for, at times at least.

As with every thing, also the place has to be measured and evaluated by the core of your personality and psychological make-up.
Nothing is objective. It is not a truism.

For those who - as I do - grapple with an idea of working in Salalalaah here is a link which shows some of the landcsape of the area and probably also pics of the city itself;
The pics of Salalah are really hard to find, most of what is available on the net about Salalah being unfortunately the pics of Nature, not Culture, I reckon having potential tourists in mind;
The link beneath reveals more than I was usually able to find while searching for Salalah images in order to help myself with a ''yes'' or a ''no'' for Salalah;
If anyone has a link for Salalah city pics, do drop it here;

Try Oman2day. http://www.apexstuff.com/ot/200902/index.asp
This monthly mag has many articles and pictures of Salalah which focus upon the cultural. Be sure to check the back issues. The editor spend a good deal of time in Salalah and area and has done a thorough coverage.

I've just received the provisional offer from them. I wonder if you ended up there and who your recruiter was. I'm also talking to Nizwa, but I've read the climate is significantly cooler in Salalah. That adds to its allure. I'd sure like to know what the working conditions are like at the school, particularly the contact hours, on-site hours and vacation. My offer only promises the vacation as prescribed by law, which is 15 days after a year. The housing allowance is 250, and I've gleaned that that is about what a single flat goes for. Anyway, I hope you or someone else can say something about the school and/or the place. Many thanks.

Nobody has any comments about SCoT or the area? What about GlobNet?

Hooboo! Hooboo ha! (That's the local Jabali for hey!) I worked at Salalah with CECN Educonsult at the Ministry of Manpower. I have nothing negative to say at all about that gig. If you like monsoon surfing, kite surfing, snorkelling, diving and wild road trips (YEMEN) and low stress then go for it! The Omanis and the breed of expat that you will encounter in Salalah really are nice and those Omani people really are as nice and friendly as everyone says they are. I would rather work in Oman than KSA any day for half the pay.

Czesc, protran! (Polish for 'howdy') I ended up with CECN at Nizwa. I can't really complain about anything. The job is great. Colleagues are great. Living conditions are satisfactory, taking into account one can always find fault in a foreign country, if they want to be nitpicky. There's a simpatico community of expats in the area. (Nizwa is as spread out on its own scale as Muscat is.) Omanis are very nice and polite, and so are the expat Indians and Filipinos. I'm finally getting a car today, and that will significantly improve my quality of life. I am sure I made a good choice to ultimately target Oman. I hope to visit Salaleh and see life in an Omani resort area. I'm sure it's great, but I've heard you get put out of your accomodation for the summer break. For me, the quiet lifestyle in Nizwa is suitable. I'm trying to get some writing done. I hope you're in a good situation where you are now, as well. TC.

Wallahladeem, That's true. Oman expects good behaviour from expats and even when there is some bad, they are lenient. Salaries are generally lower than KSA or UAE but life is much easier.
