I back MO39 on this issue as well. It has been pointed out to me by several gringoes living here in MX that you need to have a government certified translater, regardless of competency. I don�t mean to throw ashes on your fire but you would be best to go the legitimate route and pay the 500 pesos or whatever the translator charges. But before you take our word for it, check with the Mexican embassy in your host country before taking the plunge, or else you will just end up having to pay for the service twice over.

I had to present my birth certificate to immigration in Merida to gain my FM3 when I initiated my work visa. Without a work visa you will not be able to legally work here in Mexico and are subject to immediate deportation. You will not be allowed entrance to the country for the next five years. I know of two English teachers in Merida who were unceremoniously ejected from Mexico. One was interrupted by immigration officials in the middle of his English class, forced to leave the school grounds and put on a plane back to germany all within 3 hours.
