I am looking for a small furnished apartment for 6 months or so in Cuenca, Loja or VilcaBamba for an April start.

maybe sign up at Yahooexpats group. there are quite a few people there in Cuenca right now. or, call the secretary at CEDEI school and maybe someone could help.

personally, I like to look at an apartment first. do a water test, check the noise level, neighbors, or if there is construction across the street, and where the busses run.

also, the parts of Cuenca are a bit dangerous at night so you'll want to be away from that area.

personally, i would stay at a hostal the first month and look around. i worked out a good deal last January at one. however, like i said it was a tough area and I was assaulted with a bottle by a transvestite. of course, i was easily able to outrun him/her with my running shoes vs. his/her high heels Smile i wasn't hurt; she had bad aim.

That is sad... Thanks for the advice.
I am not fit enough to outrun a wheelchair bound mugger, but that could change if I see a long knife... Then I die of a heart attack trying to move my blubber.. haha.. Of course, I'm not like that yet but getting there as the middle age spread is still spreading into old age.

Yeah, I do not want a hostel because I do not want my stuff that I bring along, unsecured, exposed and open to others, so the more it is out of sight and out of mind, the safer it will be. That's the wishful thinking theory - <sniff.>

I had previously tried twice without success on the yahoo expat forum - not one reply. I will give this one a little more time before I go back to the forum.

...ask Deb the moderator - she lived in Cuenca and probably knows best. it's a bit slow on the forum there right now. not sure where people are.

again, call CEDEI and see if they have any ideas or if you could talk to one of the teachers.

otherwise, you might have to do a hostal for a week or so. there are some really good ones that cater to mostly foreigners and have secure locking areas at reception for your laptop, passport, and whatever.

Although not funny that you were assaulted by a transvestite.....that is how I met my wife 10 years ago......a bunch of them were being rounded up by the policia militar in Quito and there was quite a crowd gathered around to watch.

In the crowd was my wife....we started talking.....and here we are 10 years and 2 daughters later.

Thank God for transvestite prostitutes!!!! (wow thats a weird thing to write)
