I admit I am the sweatshirt and jeans teacher.
My Nike shoes, Levi jeans and Adidas shirt cost like 10x
what the average teacher would pay for his/her gear here.

Most student's just laughingly accuse me of being rich, not poor.

i'm 180cm tall and weight about 85kg, and was heavier when i first came to qingdao. other than pants pockets being too shallow i never had a problem finding clothes that fit at decent chinese department store or forgein trade store. the only time you will have problems with fit is clothes from a supermarket or night market (the really cheap stuff). So the stuff will be cheaper than the us or uk but you will still pay 70-100 rmb for a decent shirt most places. If you really have trouble have your stuff taylored

Itsme is right. Remember that we all form a lasting impression of a person we've never met in the first 40 seconds of meeting them. Why, like the typical backpacker, look like some slovenly fool in a badly lettered T-shirt, shorts and sandals, grubby beard when you can look a little civilized. What kind of an impression do you think that makes on you and your country. Joe Cool or just plain Joe Stupid?

No, I don't mean jacket and tie, but nice slacks (not jeans), shined shoes, collared shirt woulod be great as a starter. Then as time goes on, you can dress down a tad.

When I taught (now retired) I'd vary from a full, 3-piece business suit, white shirt and dark tie, knee length socks (to show my accounting students what an accountant looked like) to jeans and a polo shirt. At least they knew I was somewhat civilized.
