Hello All,
So a couple days ago I got a phone call and accepted an offer to come teach at Doha Academy to teach ESL - I'm flying out tonight.... I'm a Canadian!!
I was wondering if anyone knows of anywhere where I might be able to catch some NBA Basketball games on TV - Raptors Games actaully... LOL... or what about NHL hockey games??
Also, I'm a big softball/baseball player... I saw that there are little leagues in the area but are there any adult leagues for Baseball.
Please do let me know.. I'm very excited... DON'T KNOW A SINGLE PERSON!!! so if you're around and would like to help me out... please let me know... I've been to Doha for a night on transit... Went to the nice mall with the ice rink... I would love to play Ice Hockey again but I'm not bringing any equiptments with me - Is it really expensive?
I'm hoping to have a great time out there.... coming for 8 months ...
Oh very important... - CELL PHONE???? What's the best thing to do so I can txt my Finacee in Canada for cheap... And call for cheap as well I guess... or a company that has online txting option so she can TXT me for cheap.
Any info would be great... but it would be AWESOME to get some info before my flight this evening.. I would have posted sooner but Dave had to approve me first which just finished now.
Thanks,
ALI

Hi alimanek,
I can only answer a few of your questions. I know that in the Ramada (Hotel) they have lots of sports channels, showing lots of tournaments...I'm a Brit and so only watch the Premier League etc.....but my students tell me that Al Sadd Club Cafe is even better, and that's recently opened, but haven't been there yet.
I've seen quite a few people play ice hockey at the City Centre Mall, so I think there must be some kind of group going on but not sure....
Texting overseas? I just use my Qatari mobile. Thing is though, as its the only network available its quite expensive. So, I usually use skype to keep in touch with friends and family around the world.
I think you'll find that you'll get a lot more answers if you go to http://www.qatarliving.com/
Hope this helps and have a safe flight! |

There is a men's hockey league in Doha - a lot of them are teachers/instructors at CNA-Q. Don't believe that you can buy hockey equipment here but someone who is upgrading or perhaps leaving and doesn't want to take his old stuff home might be in the market to sell.
They'd also be the guys to talk to about where to watch the games - I believe the junior players practice at City Centre rink a couple of afternoons a week - talk to the parents in attendance, they'd be able to point you in the right direction.
Mobile phones are plentiful and cheap. As QC says, Skype is a great option for keeping in touch with the folks at home.
Good luck |

How is it at Doha Academy. I had a gal pal who stayed there for a few years. She moved on to a better paying job. That was her main complaint. |

Hey Wilbur...
Are things pretty quiet there? You seem to be reading through the whole Qatar board and updating all the threads. Hopefully it will be helpful for those doing searches later...
Too bad someone doesn't do it in every branch.
