I work so many hours in the U.S. that I don't think it will really bother me but I was curious if anyone else out there teaches in the mornings and then in the evenings. Also, how does prayer time affect your evening class? |

Dear AirHorn
I have worked mornings, early afternoons and evening (on the same days) in the Kingdom. That was when we (the ELC at the IPA) had so many students that evening classes had to be scheduled (and overtime given.)
You work around prayer time (which is going to change, of course, as the sun sets at different times over the course of the year.)
I was never all that fond of evening classes.
Regards,
John

Evening classes have become the norm now at IPA-ELC. Seems that there are never enough teachers and always plenty of students.
I don't much like evening classes after teaching a full class load during the day. All teachers have to work during the day -classes start at 8:00 to 2:30 with the option for teaching OT evening classes.
However, at IPA you can specify how many overtime hours you want to teach. Some don't teach any or just a few extra hours and some of us money hungry souls opt for more which translates into one, two or even three! evenings a week.
I believe IPA puts a cap on the number of OT hours one can teach in a week....for good reason.
Personally, I can only manage two evenings... that is about 11 hours OT a week (mind you some of those OT hours occur during the day as well).
I worked my way up to that over a period of time.
It can be stressful. Luckily at IPA -school terms are only 8 weeks long -so can see light at the end of the tunnel. Thus, one always has the opprotunity for a change when the next term rolls round.
Prayer times do change and there is not much one can do about it except go along with the schedule. Some teachers would prefer to have the evening classes start earlier, some are fine with the times. Patience is key to working round the prayer schedule and students coming late because of it. That is just the way it is in KSA.
The up side is the extra savings in your bank account. Overtime is paid on time and recently, IPA have changed to paying the first 4 weeks OT then the second OT payment after completion of the term; means you get half of your overtime sooner rather than later.
Personally I think the Institute of Public Administration (IPA) is a pretty good place to work.... for me anyways. |

You don't say if you're male or female.
I could be wrong, but I have heard that evening classes are more likely for male than female teachers, because it's not considered entirely appropriate for women to be away from their families in the evening. However, as more women work outside the home, this may be changing. |
