Hello,
This information about this showed up on Japanese TV yesterday (Feb. 26th, 2004) and online so I thought I should post it here:
---------------------
An Osaka Court ruled today that NOVA's non-socialization policy as it applies to Eikawa schools is in fact in breach of the Japanese human rights laws and is illegal.
The plaintiffs Robert Bisom and Paul Cook (both NOVA teachers) took NOVA to court over this very issue and won a landmark victory.
Todays court ruling is a major step forward in securing teachers' and students' rights to associate outside of the workplace as is guaranteed under Japanese law and proves that NOVA's contract clause is a direct breach of this right.
The ruling makes it virtually impossible for NOVA to fire or suspend any teacher that sees students outside of its premises.

Ah, the Ode to Joy is playing in my head.
That no contact - not no socialization - policy was not only absurd and big-brotherish, but cruel.
Sadly, I don't think that a few court rulings are going to change NOVA (or similar companies) very much. |

A tiny glimmer of hope there.... .NOVA's truly evil ways will soon catch up on them big time though. |

NOVA's response to the ruling still remains that it
"does not plan to remove the ban as it has been set in order to protect both the teachers and students from trouble as they do not know each other's cultures and customs." (Kyodo News)
What this really means is they don't want teachers dating students or taking them on as privates. At least they could be honest about that rather than make some cock eye statement that makes teachers and students sound like a naive bunch who were just born yesterday.
hahaha. |
