Hello all,

My wife and I are planning to take a CELTA course in Turkey this summer, and then we would like to stay in Turkey afterwords and work legally. My understanding is that normally to get a Turkish work permit, you need to apply from your home country, which would mean a costly flight back to the US and a long wait. However, I also understand that if you have a residence permit valid for at least 6 months, you can apply from Turkey for the work permit. My question is this: what do we need to do to qualify for a residence permit?

My research indicates we need to pay a fee, and that we need to bring proof that we have sufficient funds to live in Turkey for the time period of the permit. But are there other requirements? Do we need to have jobs, or own property (rather than rent), or anything like that, before we can get the residence permit?

The following information is from the yabancilar sube website. My comments are in italics.

11- Long-Term Residence Permit: Documents Required

1. Petition (in Turkish). buy this on site
2. 2 passport photographs. (5 if this is your first application).
3. Original passport & photocopies of pages in passport showing your photograph and last entry stamp. make copies before coming - save money
4. 1 coloured Declaration for Residence Permit form (İkamet Beyanname Form (completed using typewriter or word-processor). also buy this on site
5. Bank Statement showing capacity of $300 per month, or notarised Real Estate Deed have $300 x 6 or 12 months in bank. Bank will print statement and notarize for you
6. Original notarised Letter of Attorney for the person who will be present at the application on behalf of the foreign applicant. I don't know what this is, but I didn't need to do this last year.

I suggest you take a Turk take you. Have a lot of cash and be prepared to wait.

It is true that your employer can apply for your work permit after you have a residence permit. Remember, this is for residence only. It explicitly states: No Work!

Thanks for the info; it is very helpful. Now I just need to find out what this Letter of Attorney part is all about.

Is the cost for buying the petition and Declaration included in the price listed at the bottom of the web page, or are there going to be additional fees for the forms?

The costs for the petition and declaration are extra. I don't think more than 20 TL each. It's been almost a year, but I want to say the third item was also prepared and purchased on site.

There are men with typewriters in the hall that prepare these documents for you.
