If I've translated this one properly - being a uniform wearer you become a brave spearhead of individualism - standing up against a suicidal anti-uniform front.

Thats quite an argument for uniform wearing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

this one sounds far better -

Maybe some of us don't like to be standardised - and feel we have better things to do than obeying a master's orders on how we dress Idea

Cheers and beers to English language teachers who can string more than four words together to form a literate sentence.

The point is that it's the reason for which you choose to wear a uniform, not the uniform itself. Capice?

The reason for wearing uniform is not to make people associate white people with the company brand. The purpose is to make sure customers can see who's a staff member. There are many people in the building and parents come to drop off their kids, you know.

I've never heard of anyone wearing the uniform in a public place.

That's interesting - I assume that the FT's in your workplace are adults of average western stature - and many of them have those lao wai physical features that make us look rather different than the locals - yet you're instructed to wear uniform so the parents can pick you out from their Chinese children Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

If your bosses have told you that's the reason for your fancy dress - then I think you've been sold a bit of a porky. I don't even think Eva will buy that one Wink

Can you tell us what your uniform looks like - do you get a winter and summer uniform to compensate for seasonal change?

The uniform is used to construct an image in the mind of the consumers.
Sure it has nothing to do with teaching style but then again humans are not entirely rational are we?

There are subconscious biases in our decision making and perhaps wearing a uniform just so happens to have a positive effect on customer perception of a company.....

It's Chinese staff who receive the children. Or rather, it's the Chinese staff who's responsible for communication with parents etc. It feels better for parents to drop off their kids to a person who wears a uniform. There is a different level of certainity to it. So yes, the uniforms do make sense eventhough i don't like them.

I didn't state that the parents would be able to differ between western staff and Chinese children because of the uniform. I stated that parents would be able to differ between staff (western and chinese) and anyone.

The uniform covers torso+arms. The rest is of our own choice.

It's not the uniform that bothers me on the job or the red bulb I have on my nose, but those big clown shoes I must wear causes me to stumble when I walk. They also make it hard for me to dance my monkey dance.
I agree with the other posters it makes it easier for the parents to identify the foreign teacher.

vivuk

You are always giving EF a a bit of a slagging off whenever a post appears on the subject. So ditto englishgibson, please tell us about your experience with them. At least then we will have an idea of where you are coming from.
Or maybe you don't have any and your 'hatred' simply comes from hearsay or perhaps even from a deep dislike of businesses being involved in any form of education.

Spill the beans, amigo.

I'm coming from this the quote comes from a response I made to the other current EF thread thats running about the wages and exploitation that EF have to offer this industry -
Quote:
Do the maths - you can be sure EF have

Take it at 160hrs/month, then that 5,500 rate brings in a truly insulting - 34RMB/hour wage

Most China FT's must be horrified at the thought of folk taking these jobs - since it sends a message to other employers - that there are idiots who are actually prepared to come to China and slave for this kind of pittance (we haven't even touched on the subject of paid holiday, weekend/evening work - but if you work for EF you'll certainly be doing so).
If the big-guns can get away with this kind of daylight murder others will always be copying

I just hate to see one of the so-called EFL leaders - one of the biggest employers of FT's in China - get away with the kind of crap they do 34RMB/hour and the icing on the cake having to wear uniform that you also have to partly pay for!!!!!!!!!!

As for me - well I've never even seen an EF school let alone been inside one - and my China life has long since graduated away from that of an FT - but my fascination with the job and the scamming that goes with it - still lingers on.
But then again regardless of what I do and have ever done those terrible EF wage levels still exist - and so do those uniforms - nothing about me will ever make them go away Idea Idea Idea

Dunno bout uniforms, but at least all the clothes I ever laied my eyes upon were small...very small, so the uniforms either gotta be western-sized, or if youre a bit bigger (hopefully), just say the size doesnt fit you, do that a couple of times after theyve been at the tailor (or rather, said theyve been at the tailor), just do that enough times and theyll stop probably?

For those who love uniforms, games on!
(But yeah a uniform with a EF logon aint that much to brag about oO )

Egg, I seem to recall that you are not a native English speaker. Is that correct?

If so, would the usual Chinese bias against hiring non-native English speakers influence your decision on wearing a uniform?

What color is the uniform and how many pockets does it have? Remember Mao said only two pockets. This years spring color is pink.

You sound like someone who would make a can of tuna fish; two kids and a Chinese wife stuck in an Australian *beep*, out of reading Jean-Paul Sartre's Nausea.

Just a little far-fetched...
