I got this offer from Beijing Huijia Private School for teaching primary.
Average class size: 30-35 students/class;
Teaching material: provide by the school
Workload:18-22 teaching periods/week, each period is 45 minutes.
Starting date: August 25, 2009
Contract term: 1-2 year
Monthly salary: commensurate with candidates qualifications
Meals: 5 yuan allowance per working day
Airfare: Round way air ticket from home country to Beijing reimbursed
when finishing one-year contract.
Paid vacation: Winter Vacation for 10-month contract.
Free accident insurance
Free Mandarin class at school
Free internet access in the apartment
Sponsor work (Z) visa, Foreign Expert Certificate and Residence permit
Salary: RMB 7000 to 12,000 per month .
Accommodation : On campus Single Private Room with Western Bathroom facilities, Kitchen. Pay around RMB250 as management fee for apartment each month.
They asked me what my salary requirements were and I said 11000 RMB. Yes I know it's high, but I thought that they would make a counter offer. And they did
Thank you for your response. But sorry to tell you that we could not offer you 11000RMB for the salary. The maximum we could offer is 8000RMB according to your working experience and education background.IF you are ok with it,I would like to continue next step.
I'm not sure what to expect, I expected them to say no to 11000, but I didn't expect it to be so low, especially for Beijing. I have 6 years experience, 1.5 of that in China and have taught in primary and secondary schools for about 2 years.
Is this normal in salary negotiations in China? I do like the school, but I would like a higher salary, what's the correct way to go about this?
Thanks for all your help |

Naturegirl,
I'm not around Beijing but there is something malodorous about that contract, at least from here. For instance, pay ~250 RMB/monthly for housing management? Stinks.
The offer seems, in many respects standard boiler plate. Mandarin lessons? LOL, I doubt it. Internet? Maybe. One that you can actually use without an upgrade to ADSL?
Get some input from those around Beijing, of course |

Thanks. I found their contract here at Dave's and it's starting to look very iffy that I'll accept a position with them. So I'm still looking for good jobs, hope I find one! |

haha the infamous Hui Jia hu?
I wrote about this in another threat a long long time ago. I also responded to the job advert "in Beijing" as I was in Beijing.
"ohh just hop on bus 7## and come right on up."
Here I created a map for you http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=hui+jia+school&sll=39.972911,116.450958&sspn=0.598821,1.455688&ie=UTF8&ll=40.088579,116.376114&spn=0.286297,0.727844&z=11&msa=0&msid=104430326829756012955.00046424b1539c8b3d7fa
I think point A is accurate. I could not figure out how to delete the point B.
Basically, I felt like I was in another world. It was so quiet when I got off the bus. I have never experienced somewhere so lacking in noise! Then I was greeted by some girl named peach or plumb or some variation of that.
It seems that the place hires really qualified teachers. A lot of PhD's there.
I remember my first impression of the headmaster-- he walked in looking like a pimp. His suit must have been 100,000 RMB or something.
I also asked a student how much they paid to go there and she said 80,000 a year.
So 8,000 is not bad if you don't mind living 2 hours away from Beijing and living on campus. I got a weird vibe from the foreign teacher / Chinese management relationship though. It seems they did not get along too well.
anyway that was just my perception of the place 4 years ago. It could have changed. |

If they're not willing to pay more than 8k (the standard bp-salary) for your work experience, then they're not interested in your work experience or your ability to teach. In other words, they won't take your position seriously. You will most likely be instructed to teach "the oral English" and have 278395728934 English corners rather than actual teaching. |

I did not see the OP's qualifications but I can say that HuiJia teaches multiple courses in English. They wanted me to take over for the philosophy teacher who was leaving for one reason or another. |
