Good day all,
I hope to teach English in Hong Kong in the near future. I do not have any formal teaching experience, though I do have tutoring and coaching experience. I will be graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies in May from an American University. I plan on taking a CELTA course this summer, so I'll probably be job hunting in August.
From what I've read on this board, it seems like non-NET jobs are not all that great.
Will I be able to get a decent job with my qualifications and (lack of) experience? I can live with family for free, so that cuts out a major expense.
Any relevant info is much appreciated!
Cheers,
J |

Certainly a good idea to get your CELTA first. Then your most likely jobs, at least initially, are going to be private tutorial schools. No they don't pay great (maybe 15-20,000 HK a month or thereabouts) but there are plenty of people making a living in HK teaching at these schools and without rent to pay you could live pretty well. In time you might find something better, or you could bump up your quals and move upward that way. |
