As for the 8-8.5k salary, that's definitely considered good for teaching in Malaysia. I believe that most teachers would be lucky to get 4k per month. |
It would be interesting to do a salary survey and see what the starting salaries are these days. When I joined a private college (Subang Jaya) in 1996, the salary scale was RM1,800 to RM2,200 for BA/BSc holders, and only slightly more for MA/MSc holders. With a MSc, I negotiated a starting salary of RM2,800 with a promise to jump to RM3,000 after a six-month probationary period. (The prob period is soooo Malaysian; they insist that even people with many years of experience have it.) The college bumped me up every year until I left four years later for the east coast. I was probably around RM3,700 when I left.
An office colleague of mine (a Malaysian Tamil) interviewed in KL a couple of years back and said that many private colleges were still offering low-2000 figures for BA/BSc degree holders arguing that they didn't need people with higher qualifications and more experience. In other words, the bottom line was cost, not teaching excellence.
Even at my current, east coast college, we are seeing a split salary scheme: those of us in our posts for several years are seeing salary hikes (I am up to RM4,200 now: remember east coast), but they are lowering the starting salaries below what it was several years ago. Instead of starting fresh grads at RM1,800 (BA/BSc holders), they are giving only RM1,300!
Anyone else have any data to add to this survey?

Would that be in one of those low-cost link house areas near BB, or in an upscale BB apartment building?
I used to pay RM1,600 for a 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom house in suburbia. But, if I had to do it over again, I would live closer to the downtown, in a smaller place. I am not cut out for suburbia! I like small towns, or city centres, but not the 'Burbs!!

Regarding the salary, I'm not sure what it's like for colleges / HE institutions, but for private language schools, I think the going rate is about 3000 RM per month. Perhaps a little more.
I work for British Council so the salary is higher. I think I get about 9000 before tax, but that is definitely not the norm for Malaysia. Actually, my contract is finishing soon and I've been looking around in the international schools. Anyone know what their pay is? I've heard that I might be able to get as much as the BC pay but is that true?
And I live in a serviced apartment block near Bukit Bintang. Just behind Swiss Garden Hotel. Do you know it????? The centre is much better to live in - my local pub is just a five minute walk away...  |

I clicked under "Malaysia" and "International" jobs under "English as a Foreign Language", and found zero jobs under the former and under a dozen in the latter (all of which were in the UK). What am I doing wrong? |

You've certainly inspiried me to look to both Malaysia and Hong Kong in the future for uni jobs. I'd be content with that kind of salary in Malaysia, and even better if HK pays more, despite the cost of living. |
