All the recruiters keep telling me I need a bachelor's degree to teach in Jilin Province. I think that sounds like a load of crap. Is anyone here teaching in Jilin without a BA? |

You'll hear that both a BA and a TESOL cert are "required" for legal employment. However, anyone who's spent any amount of time in this country and is familiar with the culture knows this isn't the case, and that people without either a BA or TESOL cert are teaching throughout the country.
Try a different recruiter, or apply directly to a school you like and you should have much better luck. |

Yes. It is required. Would you want a non-degreed person teaching your kids!? No diploma? Try Africa! |

I would probably have no problem with my kids (if I had them) learning Chinese from a Chinese native with an associate's degree, a 120-hour certificate in teaching Chinese from a prestigious university, and who spoke three languages. I would consider the specific training he had received more than I would consider the amount of years he spent in a college curriculum that was unrelated to teaching his language.
I especially wouldn't mind that level of qualification if said person were not a regular teacher, but merely a conversation instructor, which is exactly what we are, don't disillusion yourself.
And actually, Africa generally requires a higher level of qualification for paid teaching than China. |

Most schools don't particularly care if you only graduated from eighth grade, as long as you look and sound foreign. It's getting the visa issued that matters to them, and the requirements (or enforcement of the requirements) vary based on the particular province and how good the school's connections are. |

I, too, would rather have somebody as Rooster described rather than a person who has a similar ignorant, short-sighted, bigoted, and arrogant attitude that someone like yourself has, no matter how many relevant degrees you might have.
A totally non-related degree has no more use than no degree at all. |

Most schools now want a minimum of a bachelor degree.
Now most check.
Kaplan doesn't require a bachelor degree to teach and do not check. However, you must be there and ready to teach on an hourly basis to fulfil their no-degree no-check requirements. |

Dear Kibbs, and the Others,
Let's return this topic to the question raised by the OP and refrain from gratuitous personal comments.
That being said, I have been approached again by numerous agencies / agents / and even governmental organization in Jilin with job prospects being rather liberally offered. I do more than meet the criteria but many, many of these job offers did not absolutely bottom-line require a university degree provided there was a TESOL or CELTA certificate and/or training somewhere in the resume plus several years teaching experience.
Requirements are often elastic when a prospective employer is faced with an empty-ESL classroom. Kibb's response was rather in extremis to say the least and not perfectly factually accurate.
Sincerely,
Xiao Lin |

I taught in Changchun, Jilin for 5 years without a degree. Universities like Ji Da and Dong Bei Shi Da require a degree.
Which school are you referring to? |

OK, everyone who has spent ANY amount of time in China doing the ESL gig (me: 2001 to 2006, continual) knows that the ONLY real requirement has absolutely NOTHING to do with your education.
It is all about...
How well you can ENTERTAIN, make the students go "ahhhhh!" (as in, "I get it!") and suck up to the big poompa at those over extravagant banquets you MUST attend about twice a month.
Prepared to:
get fat from all the oily food
have your cholesterol shoot THROUGH the ceiling
suffer numerous bouts of toilet bowl love
If you can meet all those requirements, then PLEASE APPLY!!!
