i apologize if this has been brought up before!!

Looking thru previous posts there does not seem to be any general consensus as to which overseas remittance service is better...

can anyone please provide a personal opinion?:

My situation: i am arriving in Japan very soon and i have student loans and credit card bills to pay, so i HAVE to send money from my potential Japanese bank account to my U.S. account monthly or bi-monthly

regardless of the constantly shifting exchange rate of Yen to USD and confusing online applications for set-up:

Does anyone recommend one over the other? obviously they might charge different fees for remittance service, but which one was more convenient?

thank you for any helpful replies = )

Personally, I preferred xe.com when I was in Japan simply because I could do everything online from home and the cost was fixed and lower than gollyods, and the exchange rate was always lower. It *was* a biotch to set up initially, but once that was done it was much easier and faster to do the actual transfers.

I've been told xe.com systems have changed since I was there and they're not quite as easy as they used to be, although if you can do online interbank transfers still then I don't see how they've really changed.

I used Golloyds. I didn't know XE offered a service.

It was convenient, but expensive. I think it was 2000 Yen to Lloyd's, and Mizuho Bank took another 420 Yen. I would transfer every other month because of the fees.

I too had student loans and credit card bills to pay while living in Japan. You could look into forbearance on the student loans. I think that's what it's called. No payments for a year, but the interest keeps growing. They're going to take you forever to pay off, what's a few extra thousand tossed in there?

As for the credit cards, I figured it would take me about 4 months to get situated financially, know my budget, etc., so I had 6 months worth of credit card payment money in my US account. If you can save before leaving, I'd recommend that. Otherwise just pay the minimum until you are settled in.

Best of luck. Enjoy the experience.
