I agree with the various clarifications of must, should and shall. However, the VC has to approve any resignation that does not coincide with the end of a semester when less than 6 mos notice is given in order for the resignor (??) to get full EOS benefits.

As I stated previously, this used to be at the sole discretion of the college director at which you were employed - the VC can override the director's decision now.

Does anyone know of someone who resigned without meeting the criteria and still got their EOS benefits in full?

Does anyone know the people who interviewed for QU? I got a very strange vibe from one of them.

Me Me!! (waving hand in air)

But actually, it was not stated in the contract then... it only said 6 months. I think it was probably me that caused the addition of the 'must be the end of the semester' bit since I openly told them exactly why I resigned to leave the week before final exams. Cool

It will be interesting to see if anyone else shows up who managed it since pre-historic times...

When did you resign veiled sentiments? The 'must be the end of the semester' bit is recent.

I resigned in pre-historic times... over 10 years ago. But, I heard from friends that the new 'end of semester' rule went in shortly afterwards. That said, directors were able to allow it and did in some cases.

Veiledsentiments is right. The 'end of semester' rule is not new. After looking at my contracts I found it predates me.

Since starting this thread I have discovered my future employer will allow me to start in January.

Why not... doesn't much matter at this point. Laughing

It was the exam procedure and the woman who ran it. The final straw for me was when she assigned me to be the person who sits outside the door... for an exam that had 3 proctors inside the classroom to watch over a total of 2 students. Her highness had just told me that I had to go sit outside the door, and when I said that I should probably visit the WC before sitting there for 2 hours - she said NO. When I pointed out that there were 3 people hovering over the two students, she still said NO. So, I basically told her to bite me and went to the WC anyway. She had a major temper tantrum (which all of us teachers found amusing). I decided that day that I would never again be involved in their exam process... counted the days... and handed in my resignation so that I left a week before exams the next semester. I didn't put the reason in the letter, but I told the Director, Head, and English Supervisor that they could thank her for any inconvenience.

VS's experience sounds familiar - I spent 3 hours one morning with 8 (count 'em 8 Shocked ) other teachers sitting in the main hall of the health sciences building at SWC-HCT - we were there to make sure that the two classes (with 2 proctors in each) where students were writing a test were sufficiently covered off should 1 of the proctors need a WC break or there was some other "emergency".

The chair/dean/supervisor of the Health Science department came around regularly to make sure none of us deserted our posts and to castigate one woman who had had the foresight to bring some needlework to occupy herself.

It was all a case of making sure the teachers who weren't invigilating were "kept busy" because goodness knows we didn't have any marking or other work to do Rolling Eyes

There were and are many good things about working at HCT (the students... the fellow teachers... a nice lifestyle... ability to save). BUT, when it comes to management common sense, there is none. It is centralized stupidity. The bloated management spends all of its time attending endless meetings merely to think up crap like this. There is no sensible logical intelligent reason why the back-ups can't sit at their own desks and do something useful. (and most of these mgmt people are Westerners, so you can't blame this one on the local culture)

And the real stupidity of this process is that they think it guarantees no cheating. But, the fact is that my last semester, a batch of students at intermediate level HAD the exams (done at a college in another city... and not delivered or even seen by us until the day of the exams). The lowest group got A's and had memorized grammar/spelling perfect essays answering the essay question. Good thing they had a dozen people watching them do it... really helped... Rolling Eyes

But... the barndoor was firmly locked after the horse was out running around the desert...

Have we wandered off topic again? Laughing

What would be good is if we could give feedback on the event in some official manner of response. There were a lot of very good presenters this year, but the administration of it bumbles along as ever before. Too many people waiting in very long queues for too long makes for a bad start.
