Dear nzbradly78,

By debt back home do you mean THE USA?

If so is there a statute of limitations for this debt?

If there is I suggest you consider your options.

Regards,

Matt

Now for the meat of the post. What is Hofuf like? There's not a lot of information about it on the internet. quote}

Hofof, is mid way between Dammam and Riyadh; it's part of Al-Ehsa.
It's got very beautiful scenery. Try not to miss Qara Mountain there, amazing from outside and inside. You will know exactly what I mean by the word 'Inside' only when get there. And then, get on its peak, look around and enjoy the sight of the vast ocean of green palm trees all around you.

It's relatively cheaper than other major cities in the kingdom and I am sure you will find some international schools there; they are over the place now.

Good luck

Have you had any university level experience? Not many similarities between primary school teaching and university EFL. Also, the good university level jobs require an MA or at least a BA+CELTA+ a few years of related experience, so your credentials are not a good fit.

I also fear that Hofuf might be dreadfully boring for your wife and much more conservative than most any area of Morocco. You may be used to it, but I doubt that she is. Laughing

Since you are a certified teacher, I suggest that you do some research on the international schools in the Gulf... all the Gulf, not just Saudi Arabia. You will need to check out any school carefully because many of them are international in name only and can be difficult to nightmarish (like the King Feisal School).

VS
(PS: if and when you do apply to any Gulf employers, be sure to use as a 'home address' (US or NZ) the one that you want your summer tickets and contract ending tickets to use as a destination. I would use US if you plan to go each summer to visit your parents... use one of their homes.)

Ya know, I'm getting to hate the analogy between working in Saudi and making "riches" (my quotes).

There was a time...many years ago where that kinda logic worked for me and as I networked myself into good conditions/benes, it was true. Not so much anymore.

Before you sentence your wife to the al-Hasa oasis, I'd recommend an upgrading creds and "getting a life" somewhere outside of KSA. Many will disagree with me and it's their prerogative. However, mine is mine.

But, I will admit, freesoul is absolutely correct on his/her description on that mountain. It's kinda clay-based, so can be navigated from within as well as without. Imagine walking down a channel in a mountain and looking straight up to see the stars!

nzbradly78 -- I don't mean to be unkind, but how carefully have you researched the politics of the ME, and in particular, how the attitudes of most of the people who live there have changed, since, let's say, hmmm....let's see now ....May 14, 1948 ?

Well, if found in your bag at the airport, it will be confiscated and probably will cause you unwanted troubles.

I also believe I mentioned in my first post that I lived in rural Morocco for a few years. The first question I was asked when I arrived in the backwater town I lived in (and loved, by the way) was "Are you an Israeli?" That was back in 2001 just as the intifada kicked off. My initial thought: Whoa, tough town. I cried when I left, those were some of the best years of my life.

Well, it is know that Morocco has a Jewish minority, and a lot of Israelis, including top politicians, were born in, or have strong relation with Morocco.

This is one of those strange times that I have to agree with 007. Morocco still has a practicing Jewish population and I have found most Moroccans to speak positively of their Jewish neighbors... and sadness that their numbers are decreasing. There is absolutely NO similarity between the situation in Morocco and the Gulf.

As to working in the Gulf, I did work with a few people of Jewish background, but none of them told their employers such and put Christian on their employment forms. Yes, it is on the forms and you can't put "none." Being honest and putting Jewish will immediately mean that you will NOT be hired. That is information for anyone that picks up this post from a search later.

I suspect with Cleo that this might very well be a troll... because of the arrogant tone shown by the last post.

Well, the strange times for me are when I have to disagree with Mama Lock, VS! Laughing
