Sincere apologies.

I forget how long it's been since I went through the primary visa procedures and how mercurial the rules can be. (A stupid mistake for anyone who's been here more than a few months.)

Next time I will think twice and type once.

We have only recently arrived in China and yes we had a medical. Blood pressure, blood test and Xray. We did not bother to have one before we left Australia as we knew we would get one here. There was no requirement for a medical to get our Z visa.

I don't know of anyone who has been able to skip the Chinese medical because they had one back home. As far as I know, you will be required to take the Chinese medical to get your FEC. It's no big deal as the other posters mentioned. Every medical I have had in China has included the Following.
-blood test
-hearing test
-eye test
-ultra sound
-EKG
-x-ray

It takes about 1 1/2 hours.

James, I wish you would STOP confusing the newbies with WRONG information!

The FEC means, and is, SQUAT. In fact, I never even got one in my first year (lack of exp), but school got me one in my 2nd year. Yes, it was a fully legal school.

You DO NOT NEED a medical to get the Z visa. You DO need the medical to prove you are fit to live in the community in China- that is, your RESIDENCE PERMIT!

I have as yet to figure out whether the schools themselves actually need meds to actually receive the 2 work docs that they send you to get your z visa. I don't think so. My current FAO insisted on meds before getting them, but I believe he was just concerned I needed them for the visa.

As with Humbug, I apply for my visa in Brisbane, Australia. The visa app forms do not have a q about meds, and I have never once been asked to see them. I have applied for visas about 3-4 times now.

Not sure why there is always such confusion, bit like the 'do I really need a degree' crap that goes on here!

Babala- I was one of those people actually able to get away with no med here. In my first job, being naive, got my meds done in Oz, then when I arrived I have everything to the FAO. He still insisted we travel to Lanzhou (closest capital, 12 hours drive away), I said no way in high hell and was able to get away with it!

I there is a way but you have to jump though hoops with a notery as well as a state lic. division certifying the notery and then the Chinese consl. certifiyng the previous signatures...I did it on my first trip but had to buy a form anyway to which they attached my phys. from the states...

I think it depends on the province. I had to get one in Henan, Jiangxi, Jiangxu and Hunan but not in Shanxi or Shandong. A friend of mine who is a doctor and worked here on a six month contract did it twice also. My latest job I bocked and told them I would do it once at a place they considered worthy. They were OK with this. I think they want you to know if you have a medical problem before it shows up on their examination.

In all my time in China, I only had 3 medicals. Usually if you stay in the same city, you don't need to get a new medical done every year. They give you a little medical book and other provinces may also just use that instead of requiring a new medical. For all the trouble, I would just get the medical done in China.

The last one I had done they didn't check my eyes or ears. You are herded through like cattle and the test usually takes 20 minutes. I had one where they held a tuning fork in both my ears and said " Do you hear this?" Test is about 350 rmb and you will pay usually.

Good, I don't want to get one here. I'm hoping they'll just send the papers.
