You shouldn't assume the worst about employers just because they are trying to fill a post quickly. It could be that the person they had lined up has all of a sudden decided they didn't want the job anymore or accepted a job elsewhere (perhaps even in a school if you consider the time of the year).
If this is the case, the employer would be wise to take care when finding someone else. To then have the OP asking so many questions especially about quitting procedures might have set off alarm bells.

To the OP, you should definately need to make sure to find out as many specifics about a job especially in the cases where you will be travelling so far. You'd be stupid not to. But, you need to be a little less direct, so not to worry the employer or make yourself seem pedantic and difficult.
