|

Question: how do you all expect the economic crisis back home to affect our situation here? I would assume that we are going to see many more foreigners here, and the teacher shortage filled or at least alleviated--maybe this has begun already. I've heard speculation about this, but haven't seen any numbers yet.
A second question is how does the ESL industry in Asia do in times of crisis? I've heard that when the economy isn't going nicely here, some of the last things to go are English teaching jobs for foreigners. Again, it was speculation.
Any thoughts?
thanks,

How are economic issues in the West going to affect the TEFL industry in Taiwan? Isn't it better to ask if influxes of foreign teachers will be relative to the availability of jobs in Taiwan? |

economy in NA goes to crap = consumers in NA buy less goods = demand for goods produced in Taiwan goes down = production workers in Taiwan lose jobs = Taiwanese have less money for extra things like sending their kids to bushiban = decrease in the number of students in the classes = money hungry laobans reduce the number of teachers on their staff |

The wonderful exchange rate isn't going to be luring tons of new people. The NT is turning into a giant pile of crap. |

You've obviously not been there long enough. Complaining about the 27NT=1CDN dollar exchange. A year ago at this time we were looking at 34NT=1CDN, so its actually a lot better than you're making it out to be. |

I guess it's ok for canucks. I am looking at 34NT=1USD atm, and that's the worst I've seen in 4 years. |

The link provided above goes to a graph with 2004 as the most recent year and the data includes all foreigners visiting Taiwan, not specifically North American or any other segmented demographic.
How about anecdotal evidence? Does anyone have an impression of increased numbers of job seekers coming to their place of work? Or perhaps stories of roving hordes of Americans asking where the nearest McDonald's is located? |

My impression is that there are more leaving than arriving. Many are returning home, while some are relocating to China. Taiwan is going down the drain fast. The jobs that are here pay poorly, prices stay the same in the stores or go up in some areas, and there are few opportunities to rise in a company. Teachers are getting wind of this of late. Generally speaking, the foreigners that don't leave are the hardcore element that are married to local women and can't budge an inch. |
