Hi all,

I am hoping to begin my CELTA course around May time and have bee contemplating doing so in Playa del Carmen. Does anyone have any experience of this area and/or the CELTA here?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

One of my friends was teaching there for about a year or so. She had a hard time getting steady work; she usually had a few hours here and a few hours there at different schools. She liked the area but found it difficult to support herself financially.

I did the CELTA in Playa about 4 years ago. I was happy with the course, less so with IH. Playa wasn't my cup of tea, but I stayed on for one semester in Prepa Hell. Thereafter I stuck to teaching adults, and I believe that the CELTA opened the door to a job that suited me. Playa is expensive. Bring lots of money.

A CELTA qual is the best to get, though in Mexico I dont think its too important what you have (in my experience)
Playa has lovely beaches and theres lots to do, like ruins and stuff. Not sure about teaching jobs there. A lot of locals seem to speak English, unfortuntely with that thick gringo accent, lol.

The responses so far are perplexing. The poster asks only about the program, not whether there are opportunities for teaching in Playa.
I know of two people who went through the program. One was offered a high paying preparatoria position in Acapulco three days after graduating
from the playa program, the other taught at Marista University in Merida part time and a prepa as well but after 4 years decided to take a position stateside as a director of a nonprofit, having been disappointed by the low salaries in the Yucatan area.
Regardless, both said the program was first rate. CELTA`S rep is number one in the world, so anywhere you go it will be much to your benefit.

Hey guys I was also wondering about doing the celta in playa (mainly because it's ih) but i've been there and I don't want to have "I'm a beachbum/tourist" permenantly scarred on my CV and having to pay around 2000 for the privilege, do you think prospective teachers would care about where you do your celta? Also thanks for the wealth of information in this forum...it's great!

Well, this is probably off topic but it'll be hot and humid in Playa in May.
