I'm in Korea now. I've just been offered a pretty nice sounding job in Abu Dhabi (depending on its cost of living). It's $4500 a month, free housing, free airfare, 6 hours each day, with Friday-Sunday off.

However, I'm twenty-seven, very liberal, like to go out and get drunk, meet girls, etc. I also hate hot weather.

Is there any way I could make a decent time of it? Also, what is the cost of living? Closer to third world or first world? I don't live very extravagantly... how much do you think I could save on $4500 and free housing??

Appreciate any feedback. Thanks,

Tom

Tom, it's hard to answer your question without some details. Who's offering you this job? There are a lot of scams out there. There are NO 4-day a week jobs here. 6 hours a day? Smells like a scam to me!

However, I'm twenty-seven, very liberal, like to go out and get drunk, meet girls, etc. I also hate hot weather.

Ahtho, AD is a "more" liberal city in the ME, the heat is hellish from May to October. The going out and meeting of girls is a matter of course.

1st World. Abu Dhabi is one of the most expensive cities in the World! It really sounds like yer buying into a scam! Have you read the "stickies" at the top of this page? Korea to the U.A.E., really? Do you have more than a Bachelors? If not, fergit it! This place is highly regimented and documented.

I don't live very extravagantly... how much do you think I could save on $4500 and free housing??

Appreciate any feedback. Thanks,

Hope this helps...

I smell a scam... Check this thread:

http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=58448

The dollar amount - a legitimate employer in the Emirates would give the salary in Dirhams, not Dollars... and the work description that you gave is ringing a very loud alarm bell. Unless you have an appropriate MA and 3+ years of related university level Academic English experience, there is no way you could get a salary this high. I too have never heard of a 4 day teaching week.

One detail that one needs to remember is that although alcohol and drinking are allowed, getting arrested for public drunkenness or driving drunk can get you a very nasty jail sentence... and the jails are NOT air conditioned.

For someone not used to it who is coming from a country with a winter, you will find it hellishly hot from late April through mid-November. (from 35 to 50C)

Smells like a scam.
That is 16000 AED a month (roughly). I know several teachers who started near that level, but all of them have a MA and 5+ years teaching experience.

At 27, unless you finished an MA in TESL/TESOL/Applied linguistics at 22 (which is possible), you wouldn't have enough experience plus the MA to get a position with a top tier uni in the UAE (which is what the salary scale suggests).

Now there are a few places (ECAE and PI come to mind) which do offer salaries near that level for starting teachers, but the vast majority start at less than that for an MA and three years teaching experience.

I'd check the employer out, and read the thread on scams.

Yeah but the PI is a forty hour week, 5 days a week.
And what does "free housing" mean exactly? Are they offering a housing allowance (in which case be careful cos rents are nightmarishly high here at the mo) or do they have purpose built accomm (in which case what, exactly, are they offering you)?

Didn't that scam give a cost of living increase? 4,500 USD used to be the red flags (along with days off, blah blah) But someone awhile back said they'd been offered 4,800 USD.

Send the link. Just curious if they're still redirecting the Ministry of labor home page to a .tk or if they've put up another amusing website.

This scam is sort of like the US version of The Office. Kinda funny the first year or two but it's getting stale.

Thought 1) It's a scam offer

Thought 2) Even if it wasn't --- AD is likely not the place for you

Koreatom:
You made no mention of offer or work type, but then again, you really came across like your idea of work was......meet girls and get drunk!
Who offers $4500/month for nothing? Same reason why High School flunkies from Russia and Nigeria are making a living on the internet!!! Look before you leap!!!

The OP sounds like some h.s. flunkie with nothing better to do than plant fake posts. "I like to go out and get drunk and meet girls and I hate hot weather" is the kind of sophomoric comment that, while it describes many of us seasoned pros in our private moments, is not the kind of thing we actually post.
