Can anyone recommend any agencies that they have had any success with in terms of securing a teaching position? If so, were you able to obtain a Z visa in advance? Was the position as promised?
Thanks

Louise this is a modern day delema for English teachers. It is the best to deal directly with the people you will work for, but in China the Chinese prefer to deal with an other Chinese. It is like Chinese action movies where one person takes on hoards of bad people and wins. In reality Chinese only identify being part of a hoard of people taking on one person. |

Louise,
As it appears to be the usual case these days on this board, your post generated lots of shall-we-say unhelpful answers and nothing that would benefit you.
Please send me a PM and I will provide you with some good contact.

And sorry for your introduction to this board. For a while, it was helpful around here but things have "gone south" again as we say. |

Basically, do not ever work with a Chinese recruiting company who is based in China. Try to work with a school directly, if you cant work with a school directly or become frustrated, or if you have a special case like bringing family then consider reputable organizations that are well funded and located in your country, subject to local laws and regulations.
Some examples of very good organizations include,
Journeyeast.org, CIEE, Marshal.
Those companies take care of your paperwork and handle all the headaches of placement. But if you are savvy and willing to negotiate with many schools over a span of several weeks or months, then by all means go it alone. Some of the orgs above have costs which are very similar to the cost of doing it on your own and you get the benefit of in-country support.
Most people on this board are recruiters posing as esl teachers, so be forwarned when someone asks you to "PM" them for information. |

Like it or not, the employment recruiter is a large part of the employment equation in China.
Sure, having an inside contact is very good, provided that the inside contact actually READS the application.
If one wants to score one of those elusive 100,000 RMB per month, twenty hours per week jobs, you WILL need an inside contact.
And probably a Ouija board to find him.
If the advice the OP was given was so terrible, perhaps you could be so kind as to post your information which you imply to be so much better than what others have given him so far.
The information offered by others actually reflects the reality of the way in which the vast majority of people LEARN of positions. Recruiters can be bypassed, but the schools do not always respond to direct contact.
If your experience and observation conflicts with my experience and observation-- and that of others--- please be so kind as to publicly post your information so that the rest of us who want to help others may offer the same quality of information to all--- PUBLICLY rather than through PM. I think that's a much better way to help than to deride the other responders.
To wit, what do you know that no one else knows?
Thanks in advance. |

Kibbs, let me tell you in no uncertain terms that I am not a recruiter, that I have never been a recruiter and that I will never be a recruiter. I have been in China a good number of years and have built up a considerable amount of worthy contacts both in and out of the ESL field. Louise strikes me as an earnest poster, which is not something that I would say about many (like the comment or not, Kibbs, it's my own personal opinion and I am entitled to have one) and I am trying to help a poster who was not particularly helped by others.
Louise, I can't believe that kibbs even suggested journeyeast. That one is a particular avoid for many reasons.
