Human nature has it that nobody can possibly say positive things about the Saudis. Especially on this forum. We've only got some senators who occasionally slap someone's wrist when they go too far with criticism. |
COMPLACENCE?
Human nature has it that........... |
The lady might be of Middle Eastern origin, if the nickname is somehow related to the real name (Noor -> Noora?). |

| From what I have seen, both guys and gals can be called Noor. After all, it means light which has no gender connotations. |

Just wondering if Carol Thatcher was axed by BBC over the 'golliwog' story, shouldnt there be a forum rule banning racist remarks such as 'ragsheads'. I think we need to be reminded every now and then that through the same 'ragheads', we manage to pay our bills back home.
It really puzzles me to see a teacher who has been in the kingdom for ages and still is not even willing to accept- I am not saying embrace- the new culture with its badies and goodies. |

I doubt it not. However, the fact that the OP wrote
"I came with my husband and 2 daughters"
insinuates the vague suspicion that it might be a woman. |

This is the kind of racist rant that so many western expats indulge in. They moan and whine and complain incessantly about everything in Saudi Arabia. Yet, hypocrites that they are, they continue to renew their contracts again and again, pocketing the kind of money that they would never be able to earn in their country of origin. |

Ok, so if people complain about a place, they are RACIST?
In the US, I have put up with generations of foreign students, going through culture shock, complaining that the US and everything in it was awful. Am I to assume that they also were RACIST?
Sorry, but I don't think so. |

Obviously, it depends on the nature of the complaint. Anyone with some appreciation of basic logic should be able to comprehend that simple fact. By the way, using racial slurs to describe people, as the poster did, is in fact racist, in my book. Many Americans, with their long history of racial oppression, sometimes find it difficult, even now, to defenestrate some of their more naive and somewhat intolerant assumptions. |

If there is one thing living and working in the Middle East taught me, it is that Americans are no more (or less) racist than any other group of people. The first time I heard "raghead" was from a non-Gulf Arab. At least in the US, there is a recognition that racism exists and that it is wrong and that it should be stopped.
Having heard so much of the supposed equality of races being part of Islam, I was shocked to find the most blatant, outspoken, hateful racism being bandied about as relates to even their fellow Muslims. It is much worse than in the US and everyone in the Gulf sticks their head in the ever-present sand and pretends it doesn't exist.
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone... a rather famous Prophet suggested.

Dear cassava,
I'm confused. Are you saying that Nashledanou was "racist" for using the "R" word? By my reading, the poster was inveighing AGAINST people who use it.
Have I misconstrued your message?

John |

Dear narmtal,
Nice job of research. But I'm not sure just what conclusion I should come to except that it looks like the posting was a cut and paste job.
But there are so many possibilities opened up, I'm not sure which would be correct.
Regards,
John |

I agree with Cleo that the most virulent racism I have encountered has been in the Gulf....and I would also add Japan to that list as well.
As for Americans being racist, yes, among a certain class, they are. However, I have been shocked to find that among the "Western expat" groups I have encountered in the Gulf, it is well-educated British teachers who have expressed the most racial hatred. American teachers are usually very PC, but not so my British colleagues. |

People, I defy you to find me any country, region, province, city, district, neighbourhood, street, apartment block in the world where racism (or some other form of bigoted supremacy) does not exist!
Given that this can go right down to the tribal level (and even sub-divisions within these tribes!), you'll be hard-pressed to do so.
Now, if the debate is about open racism, then yes, some countries are better or worse than others. Also, about state-based racism, then once again, some of you have a point.
Case in point, Rwanda. The Tutsi and Hutus could not be told apart except for perhaps by name or where they lived.
I think Star Trek demonstrated this quite well (for the record, I am not a Trekkie - not that there's anything wrong with being one...whatever's your poison!) where some planet had two alien species with the same patterns on them. The difference being the one's pattern was the mirror image (reverse) of the other... |
