Hi there, can you please advise me about EFL job prospects and pay in Japan.
I have;
TESOL Cert,
TESOL Diploma,
HND Business Studies,
first degree (Open University UK),
masters degree (MA Education),
PGCE (post compulsory) = equivalent of PGDE.
Im British, a director of studies of an EFL Dept. at a UK College of FE and Ive been teaching for 17 years.
Given my situation, what kind of jobs and salary might I expect? Thanks very much for your help. |

You might be lucky enough to land a university teaching job, in which case the pay is higher than most others. Here is a link to what salaries are offered in Kansai:

Or look at specific job ads:

Realize that usually, it takes publications, experience in Japan, and some Japanese language skills along with a master's degree just to begin uni work.
Otherwise, you might have to start at the bottom in eikaiwa with 220,000 to 250,000 yen/month (some are a little higher), or with JET ALT work at 300,000 yen/month, or business English school work at 300,000 - 350,000 yen/month.
Don't cry too much, though. Look at what Japanese PhDs might expect to make.

JET wouldn't touch him with those qualifications and with 17 years exp he's likely over the 40 YO point too. |
