Don't worry Naturegirl they will approach you. There is a desperate need for female teachers here. If you are a workaholic I suggest going to Taiwan. They work you hard but pay well.

Experience means little nothing, especially in this field.

i don't know about that. I have made a few contacts, gotten to know the way the game is played here and it has helped me earn quite a bit more than i would have otherwise (usually around 25%)and avoid demo classes.

You mentioned that you regard a starting salary of 5 K as "too low". Yet, I have come across reports that starting salaries can be as low as 2 K - especially at lower level unis/colleges in the more remote parts of the country . Recently, a former colleague (with a BA, TESOL cert, and about 3 or 4 years teaching exp in China) advised me that he had accepted a uni job, somewhere in the NE, that only pays around 3.8 K ! !

But for a newbie with at least a Master's degree, a final offer of 5 K is quite good. For a BA holder, then 4K - or maybe 4.5 K, with a bit of luck
.

in my experience that is pretty low but i have never worked at a university for that reason.

Nature Girl you may want to look into lower level international schools and higher end language centers if you don't mind working 25 classes a week.

I guess persistance and patience have paid off. I got a good job offer, now just at the negotiation stage.

Naturegirl,

That's great news !

However, in your negotiations don't just focus on salary and working hours. You should ascertain what subjects you'll be teaching - eg, 20 hours of writing classes would involve much more preparation, h/w marking, etc, than the same number of hours merely teaching Oral English !

Also, take note whether you'll be paid 12 monthly salary payments - or, just 10 is is often the case nowadays.

It might be worthwhile to ask them to increase the airfare reimbursement - usually around 8 K RMB - the return fare between Peru and China, I'm sure, would be much more than that !

And, of course, don't forget the other possible perks, such as free utilities and drinking water, local taxi allowance, meal vouchers, weekly bus tickets to the nearest large city, etc. At some schools/unis, the quoted salary could even be net, ie to say, the amount that is actually paid into your bank a/c every month - meaning, as an additional perk, your employer could even pay your tax ! But check v.carefully regarding this - as I've heard of cases of when this is meant to be happening, but the "tax money" in question hasn't been going to the tax office !

Good luck,

Peter

Thanks, though I'm nervous about negotiating. I know to ask about the subjects. The contract's only for 10 months, so we'll see.
Airfare to Korea was 1200 one way. China should be the same. I'll actually be going to Chicago, but then coming back to Peru to settle some legal business . I'd do it now, but my mom has refused to send the papers and has told me I have to go in person to get them from her.

ONe thign, anyone know about living on campus? The two previous jobs I had, I was off. And with a husband, all the more reason to be off. But I'm not sure the monthly rent allowance will cover it. Utlities are free as is housing, if I'm on campus, but it's only 30m2, not much. I'm waiting for a list and photos of the flat.

Thanks for the ideas, I'm writing them down now.

There are some good reasons to live on campus. I like having other teachers nearby. It would be easy to be isolated off campus. Living in the same building with Chinese teachers will give you some contact with them. You might not ever see them or get to know them at all if you live off campus. The chances of someone speaking (some) English are pretty good on a university campus, but out in town your neighbors might not speak any English.

Hope your negotiations work out well.

Many teachers have spouses living on campus with them. Where I am the school gives couples two bedroom apartments, singles get one bedroom.

30m2 is tiny... 10months living in a shoe box doesnt sound too good... i would be pushing for off campus housing... or atleast a bigger place on campus... my place is 60m and it still seems small..
