Z visa = work visa

L visa = tourist/visitor visa

The math isn't that difficult

A Z visa is only good for thirty days. If you look, usually it shows it is valid for "000" days. The date starts when you enter China.

The purpose of the Z visa is to allow you to enter the country to take employment. During that 30 days, you will have an FRP (Foreign Residence Permit) issued, which is what allows you to legally work in China.

I believe six months is the minimum length of contract upon which an FRP will be issued.

You are correct, Teatime. The residence permit is 6 months, not the "Z" visa. My bad.

The 000 is actually a classification code which mean one entry...

The start date is the date of the stamp on your passport by immigration control.

And the classification code you refer to is written as such: 'Entries 01'

On the line below that, is written: 'Duration of each stay 000 days after entry'.

Just telling what I leaned at a recient visa confrence...

It is very important to note that a z-visa grants access to China only and is valid for a period of no more than 30-days. You must register at the local Public Security Bureau within 48 hours of arriving.

The, "000" means only one entry for 30-days. During this period your employer should begin the formalities of registering you for a Residence Permit. Once a Resident Permit is obtained, you will be able to travel in and out of China without the need of a multiple entry visa for as long as your residence permit is good for. Residence permits are usually valid for one-year.

On the z visas I have seen....the top line by the big z has the word: entry and the classification 000 and below tht is the space for the duration of each stay...which should be 30 or less;when issued inside china .. such as converting from an L to a Z... this line is sometimes indicated by a 0...

perhaps your province has bad aim or they are using a diffrent z visa..

As usual the entire of the original question has been ignored and some ridiculous tangent has arose.

If you intend to work and accept a salary you must have a Z visa. The length of employment is not relevant; 3 months, 6 months, or more.

To obtain your FEC and register properly with the PSB you must have a valid work visa.

So yes, getting a Z visa for a 6 month teach term is not an issue.

Teaching with a visitor visa is not legal. Don't believe the school.

It's that simple.

A "Z" visa gets you in the country with permission to work as a foreign expert. The "Z" visa is then "converted" into a residence permit. The duration of the residence permit usually corresponds to the length of the contract, but not always.
