I'm currently applying for a Raytheon job in Jeddah/Taif. Has anyone heard anything about this company? I know it involves teaching the Saudi Air Force and living a compound life, but not sure how that is. This would my trip into the Middle East, so not even green yet.

Try a search. I think some info has appeared about Raytheon in these threads somewhere.
I was there for a couple of years, a long time ago. It was a terrible job. In fact, our job was to eat s&%$. And with only one month annual vacation. |

| There has been much discussion about this place over the years. In addition to doing a search on Raytheon, do a search on SALTS. That was the subcontractor that ran the program for a few years. Just about anything that is said about the job in the SALTS posts will be true of the Raytheon posts. In general the students are HORRIBLE, the curriculum is HORRIBLE, the management is INCOMPETENT and the salary is FABULOUS. If you apply, expect to be treated rudely. |

| I interviewed with the HR at Raytheon before I left Saudi Arabia. He told me he would have me back in the Kingdom in two months. That was nine months ago. |

Yes, this is a common complaint about Raytheon/SALTS. I quit a job in Asia to return to the US for an interview. It was required that you be resident in the US prior to the interview. Anyway, from my return to actual deployment to SA took 10 months. During those 10 months of unemployment, there was a lot of downtime when I couldn't get any response from the company whatsoever. About the time I had given up and began looking for other positions, they contacted me as if no time had passed and asked me to deploy asap. I went but then felt no guilt later in breaking my contract early and taking my dream job.
Oh, they don't teach Air Force. They teach Air Defense Forces which is a huge difference in both aptitude and attitude.

Aka the dregs of Saudi society. How much lower in this world can you get? Imagine a combination of the movie Con Air and the TV show Welcome Back Kotter. Those were the cadets. The officers students are snarling, scornful, arrogant scum. |

Sometimes former teachers who get cushy corporate jobs forget where they came from and what it's like to be out of work and worried sick about supporting a family even though they were in the same boat once. |

| I once posted an excerpt from a travel memoir I wrote, about a series of classroom incidents at Raytheon-Jeddah in which certain students kept bragging how they chased little "fat boys" down the corniche for afternoon delights and carnal thrills. I never claimed I thought they were serious, but it was bizarre to even think those stories up and tell them to me in class. One of the most notorious apologists (a female) for the Kingdom of Humanity on these boards accused me of being a liar and making it all up. Guess what--I didn't. Anyone who taught at Raytheon will find it all credible and unsurprising. But, of course, what do I know? I couldn't possibly know as much about teaching Air Defense lads as some western woman in an abaya. |

I could tell you a dozen stories from this place, many similar to the one above, and none of them would make it past the Thought Police. Let's just say they don't call KSA Happy Land for Men for nothing. |
