Hello world,

I just completed my BA from the University of North Texas (in America) and received a TEFL certificate from i to i. Along with 2 friends of mine that have the same credentials as I, we are looking to get a TEFL job somewhere in the Far East (preferably Taiwan, China or Japan). We would like to teach at the same school if at all possible. We have been searching vigorously for a couple of months now with little success. It seems like there a lot of scams out there, and we definitely don't want that. So we're posting on Dave's ESL Cafe to get some guidance and hopefully land a job ASAP!! We would like to leave by mid-late January 2009. Our only stipulation is that we want to live in a pretty urban city...I hope that's not asking too much Smile

Regards,

Jess, Mil and Sam

Japan news.

Expecting to find a job for 3 people in the same company is unrealistic. At best, you would be hired by a huge eikaiwa and sent to different branches.

You've been looking for a couple of months? Not much time, but it is also the worst time of year for Japan. Start again in late January or mid-February. Better still, come here at that time, if you can afford $4000-5000 to tide you over for 3 months.

Well, you have a good chance of finding jobs in the same country. A decent chance of finding jobs in the same city. Almost no chance of finding jobs at the same school.

Ya it seems like Japan is the cream of the crop of TEFL jobs, realistically we were looking at either China or Taiwan.

My advice would be to choose which country you want to teach. Read the "sticky" in each country forum to help you decide. Then try to gather as much information as you can on the country you have selected, and just go there to find a job. Don't sign a contract through internet without meeting anybody or seeing the school. I think for Taiwan and China it will be pretty easy to get there and find jobs in the same city, as long as you can live without working for a couple of weeks. Since the cost of living in Japan is more expensive, it might be harder to go there and look for a job.

I think it's the same as finding a job in New York for example, you have to be there, go knock on doors and compare every offer to make the best decision.

Good luck

A couple of unnecessary "asides" have been deleted and it would be a good idea to stick to the topic if you want this thread to continue and avoid a sanction.
