I'm no lady, but women are in demand here at both language courses and regular schools, especially for pre-primary and primary, but also for secondary and tertiary education. You should have no trouble finding work here in any of the larger cities, and there are even some out of the way places where you can get work.

From what I've heard from the females here, it's safe here.

As long as you don't have to interact with government officials, who are generally super corrupt, you'll have a positive experience... But, please ask on this place or www.expat.or.id about the school you're considering. There are some owners/bosses who are really underhanded wankers.

Providing you take the same common-sense precautions you take in your home country, you shouldn't have too many problems.
They're not ultra conservative here, but it's wise to dress fairly modestly and behave with a little decorum, as guests in their country.
As a foreign woman, you'll attract a bit of unwanted attention from males, which can be annoying, but is usually non-threatening and arises out of curiosity (and often both males and females want to practise their English).
Pickpockets are to be found all over the world, so looking after your personal belongings is just as much an issue here as elsewhere.
Overall, I feel safer here than in my home country. Here, at least I know they're not in a drug-fuellled state, or hyped up on other substances.
The social mores are probably very different to your country of origin, but I've been here several years and I like and respect their values.
PM me if you want more info on life as a woman in this fascinating country.

Female here..

I have never felt unsafe in Jakarta... however as my own rule, at night say after 8pm.. I'll only ever travel in a blue bird taxi. During the day or early evenings, I'll take any taxi that comes along and touch wood I've never had a problem.

I happen to LOVE working with the younger children, say grade 1 or grade 2, and have always been in demand where I work, because nobody else wants to teach students at that level.

As for accomodation, find an apartment or a share house to live in. If you decide to live in a house by your own, just take the normal precautions as you would in your own country. If you get to know your neighbours you will find that they'll look after you....

if you need any more "detailed" advice feel free to send me a message Smile

Jakarta is safe. You hear a lot of horror stories but I am yet to meet anyone in over 18 months of living here who has had a problem. Maybe a couple of Indonesian guys might stare at the white woman, but, as I said I don't know anyone who has had any serious harassment.
