|
|
I have an upcoming contract with Westgate in April and I hope to use this short term contract as a stepping stone to other teaching positions in Japan.
Q: if securing another position at an eikawa or other school proves impossible before the end of my Westgate contract what situation am I likely to face if I want to renew with Westgate?
Is it as seamless as WG makes it seem?
How long is the homeless/downtime between contracts?
Is it a renewal to the same school or simply a renewal with WG?
Any repeat WGaters? Why do you do it?
Thanks for any information. I want to try to get on this situation before it creeps up on me and I am forced to return to the Midwest recession with only a few snapshots of Mt. Fuji. |

It's up to them. Word on the street is that they usually don't renew for consecutive contracts. Perhaps case by case.
As far as your visa is concerned, you have it until it expires. However, realize that it is not the kind that lets you work at eikaiwa. You must change it to a Specialist in Humanities/International Relations work visa, or get special permission from immigration to do that sort of work while continuing most of your work in the right field (e.g., public schools).

If they agree to renewing your contract, it should be seamless. Don't know what WG actually says. How about telling us?

See first paragraph answers.

You renew the contract with WG, not the school to which you are farmed out. If WG wants to continue sending you there, that's their business. |

In my experience, I renewed contracts with Westgate several times consecutively and I know of quite a few other people who did. Unless they've changed something since 2006, this would still be the same (of course depending on your performance).
You will basically need to fill the time between contracts with either going home, travel or some other kind of work. That will be from July? to September.
It may be for the same school, and you can request that it is.
Why did I do it? Many reasons. I liked Japan. The work was easy. There was no hassle. Westgate look after you. The salary is good. I liked the students. I made friends in Japan. I had lots of free time. I got to travel around Japan. I got to see my family at the end of every three months. Flights were free. I saved money. And possibly others that I haven't thought of.
Hope you enjoy it. |
