I AM ONLY JOKING
I am for ever going to be known as Sidjameson, ah yes he's that sad bustard with the breast fixation. Well this I can live with. After all there's no smoke with fire. (eh girls)
But the point of this post is that I have noticed that not only my humour but other people's jokes often were taken completely seriously. I guess this is one of the limitations of communicating via a forum. Honestly I am pretty sure that if I had said all that I had said face to face none of you, maybe with the exception of Sara would have taken offence at anything I said. Even my mud slinging (except once when it was suggested that no girl would be stupid enough to go out with me) was only done in fun.
Anyway I don't want to rehash the old material in the last thread( I do enough of that when I am teaching:-) I am just asking how many of you feel that your wit gets misunderstood and fails to get the glowing praise that it deserves?
I don't actually expect a women to tidy up my apartment, cooking dinner is enough.
Hope everybody has some good classes today. |

Hey, how did you manage to get the "b" word out without activating Robocop???
I have to say that I do feel misunderstood at times on this forum but I also think this is to be expected given that we cannot read body language (what percentage of communication is non-verbal? 90%?) and we can't get a true feeling for one another's personalities (only a small inkling). As for me, I tend to make light of things that perhaps I shouldn't make light of and this will result in someone on Dave's being offended from time to time. This pretty much never happens in "real life", so I chalk it up to the mystery of the 'net. Certainly I can't expect everyone here to get my twisted sense of humour because, well, you "don't know me from Adam". Fortunately, I have some offline friends who think I am roll-on-the-floor funny. |

I can say any faking thing my faked up piece of sheet for a brain can come up with as long as I don't know how to spell the bustard. |

I was referring to b-reast, not bustard. Any time I have tried to type the word b-reast in its complete form, it was beeped out by Robocop. |

I agree. I find it easy to be misunderstood, or to realize there are additional interpretations I hadn't considered, especially with jokes and more subtle tongue-in-cheek or irony. And also, when people react, it's hard to tell how offended they actually are, as well, whether they're just clarifying because they didn't understand or hurling their computer across the room. With Email, too, I've seen incredibly bizarre misunderstandings happen with email because of jokes, misunderstandings that just got worse as people tried to explain. Even the little smiley faces don't help. |

Saudade I see you're residing in Brazil. I've heard great things about the size of the love pillows down that way. Whats your feel of the situation?
Anyone who knows me would know I was making fun of what has gone on before, even including myself. But the trouble is with the written word it only goes to show how differently others can see us. |

Dear Capergirl,
"Certainly I can't expect everyone here to get my twisted sense of humour because, well, you 'don't know me from Adam'.
Yikes - if they "don't know" you "from Adam", I'd say they've got quite a problem. Shouldn't it be
"Certainly I can't expect everyone here to get my twisted sense of humour because, well, you "don't know me from Eve".
Regards,

Who are Adam and Eve? I haven't seen them post anything recently. Therefore they must be mythyological. |

Dear dmb,
"Therefore they must be mythological."

I suppose you are (technically) correct, John. Where I come from, however, even the women say "you don't know me from Adam". I guess we just don't like messing with a good idiomatic expression. |

I think the problem is not only that online communication can be tricky to interpret, but also that we don't know you. (Or maybe someone on the board has met you in person?)
As to how we would take it face-to-face, if a guy I'd never met before walked into a room full of both men and women and started asking where he could go to see some big boobies, I'd react in much the same way I reacted to seeing it online. I would just sigh.
If a friend whose sense of humor I already understood said the same thing, I'd laugh and go along with the joke. (I have several close male friends, and we joke about sex all the time. As far as I know, neither party ever gets offended.)

As for the "B" word, singular works while plural does not. |
