I have noticed in most of the ads I have seen to schools in Taiwan they list an hourly rate for the teacher's salary and not a monthly rate. Is there any reason for this?

Its to the teachers benefit. You get paid for the hours you work. Some places try to offer "salary" positions, which often equates to low hourly wage because a lot of extra hours are required by these "salaried" positions.
