Hello all, I'm 21, just finished my English Honours Degree and my 20hour TEFL course.

I will be travelling to Santiago, Chile, in July and will be staying and working in a hostel while looking for teaching work.

I speak almost no spanish, but i am keen and willing to work hard once I am over there.

I would like to know what I am to expect in Santiago so as to prepare myself as best as possible for my trip.

Any advice would be welcome, and warnings or any encouragement

Hi Andy,
You posted a nearly identical question yesterday. The Chile forum is slow, you've just kinda got to wait around a bit for more input. Hopefully it will come. Spend some time looking around previous threads, a lot of your questions can be answered there.

One other comment I have is that you've mentioned you're willing to work hard once you get to Chile but don't speak Spanish. You might want to put some hard work into studying Spanish before you come, as the sooner you start the further along you will be once you get here and your language will develop faster with more knowledge under your belt. In Chile it is not as easy to get by with just English as it is in many other countries, as here the average person doesn't manage the language well, usually just the tourism focused places will be a guarantee on speaking English. Daily life, the process to find an apartment, getting directions, etc... will usually require you to use Spanish or play charades. Again good luck and check out the archives...

This isn't the best place to be in July (unless you love to ski). You can expect temperatures between 1 and 15 degrees Celcius with rain and little or no heat in your apartment. As for knowing Spanish, you're pretty much screwed without it. You'll probably find yourself hooking up with other anglophones to get around as most Santiaguinos aren't used to foreigners and couldn't give a rats rear about them either.
