|

Hello all,
I have enjoyed being a long-time lurker and would greatly appreciate any help from the knowledgeable LA posters.
Qualifications:
BA degree in Humanities/English from a 4 year University in Texas
Texas Standard Teacher Certification: 8th-12th grade English Language Arts/Reading
1 year of experience in a Texas public school teaching 9th-12th grade English.
My desire is to move to Central/South America and teach at a middle/high school, university, language school or to adults.
I would like to go where getting work/teaching visas are not a problem.
First Question:
Will having my Texas teacher certification get me a better paying position?
Second question:
I am looking at three options for certification:
1. CELTA
2. SIT TESOL
3. ITTO TESOL
In reference to business, university or high school teaching jobs that request CELTA or equal certification.
Are all three considered equal in Latin America or does one hold more weight over the others?
I have searched the board but dont see this question answered specifically.
Thanks for any help,
Johnson |

As Naturegirl said - having a teaching certificate makes you eligible to teach at international schools, which generally pay the best (I teach at one). The resources she cites is good, I'd add
www.tieonline.com
which specifically works with international schools. There is an annual membership fee to get the publication and to have access to the job data base, but if you are serious about finding a job down here, I think it is well worth it.
Finally, I know my school Colegio Americano in Guayaquil, Ecuador, is advertising for an English/Language Arts teacher, if you are interested.

Thanks for the links Naturegirl.
Salverston, thanks for yours too.
I have some questions about the job and Ecuador. I don't see much info. on the website about the job, but the school looks like a nice place to work.
I will send you a PM about the matter.
Thanks,
Johnson |

Hello Johnson
I can recommend Southern Cross Teacher Training in Ecuador. It's the only CELTA center in the country, and it's very good. I know because I created it . We are the only CELTA center in South America with an active job placement program. Thus far our placement rate with reputable, vetted schools and universities is 100%
Several certifications are adequate for international schools in Ecuador, but CELTA is by far the most widely recognized globally. You can check the website here or message me if you have any other questions. Good luck!
