I have heard that salaries are not very good in Oman. Is that true? Also I see little advertised. Could someone tell me where the best jobs can be found? |

This depends on where you are coming from.
The "best" jobs depend on a number of factors, but Sultan Qaboos University is probably as good as you are going to get.
The salary for an English Language Instructor at SQU is about 1400 rials (including allowances) but you also get free accommodation. For anyone coming from Britain, 1400 is quite good because at the moment the exchange rate is favourable (strong dollar; weak pound). Three years ago, the exchange rate worked the other way. |

Thank you for the salary information and for recommending Sultan Qaboos University. I can't seem to find any email address for the university. Can anyone help? |

Google... they have a website with an employment section. Last time I visited it, you still had to apply by mail.

www.squ.edu.om
I think they've got an email address now for CVs.

If you hit the link that denise provided, you will see on the right side of the page - job vacancies.
You didn't mention whether you were interested in the Language Center or content courses. If you are looking in EFL, go to the top where it says "centers" ... you get a drop down... choose support centers, then choose Language Center. Once you get to that page, click on "employment."
And... it says to send the CV and all supporting documents... and gives the mailing address.

Actually, it's pretty straightforward, if you follow veiledsentiments' instructions.

If all else fails, write to
The Director
The Language Center
Sultan Qaboos University
P.O. Box 43
P.C. 123
Al Khod
Sultanate of Oman.
Send her your email address and she will get back to you.

Thank you very much. The instructions were clear and I found the email address. While I am here, I've noted that there seem to be few EFL university openings in the Middle East, at least judging by this website. Is this the case? |

THere are ALWAYS openings.
The problem can be locating the better - however you interpret that - ones.
The Job Fair at TESOL Arabia attracts a fair number of recruiters, but others use the educational press in Britain - Times Educational Supplement; ther Guardian Educational Supplement or Educational Exhibitions, and sometimes posts can be offered just through the grapevine.
Sometimes, moreover, the institutions themselves do little to help you. Some years ago the HCT in the UAE had an on-line application form that happily accepted M.A. but refused to accept M.Sc.; M.Phil. or M. App. Ling. I assume that they have sorted that out by now, but I remember one ex-colleague who just gave up and started looking elsewhere. |
