reading back it seems that money is not a huge concern for you?
Thats probably good because it will be very difficult to get a good well paying job off the bat. Yes your age is a real concern. Late 50's is not impossible but you will be at a clear disadvantage going into an interview.
But you do have experience.
I have heard that some ALT dispatch agencies have some 50 year olds, I would try them (as money is not a big concern and its an easy way into your 1st job)

Timing is perhaps bad too (?) right now, for 2 reasons
1 the financial crisis
2 April is the start of the school year

IMO if money is not a big issue I would try it but be prepared to look around for a while (you might have to support your self for a few months) and Japan is not cheap.

another thing, most posters here are probably below 40 years old (??) so they might have some idea of your exact chances but ......
